New Mexico defensive lineman Nahje Flowers dies at 21 image

New Mexico defensive lineman Nahje Flowers has died, the university announced Tuesday. He was 21.

"Earlier this morning we were made aware of the tragic loss of Nahje Flowers," New Mexico coach Bob Davie said in a statement. "Our entire football team and everyone who knew Nahje are devastated by this loss. Nahje was a wonderful person and great teammate. Our entire Lobo Football family mourns his passing and our prayers go out to his family."

"Our focus right now is on the well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff and the support needed," New Mexico athletic director Eddie Nuñez said in a statement. "Nahje was an incredible young man. Our entire Lobo Football family mourns his passing, and our prayers go out to his family."

Flowers, a junior, played in five games this season, totaling 13 tackles, two for loss, 1.5 sacks and a blocked kick.

New Mexico was scheduled to play Air Force on Saturday in Albuquerque. The game has been postponed to Nov. 23, previously an off-week for both schools.
