A three-star football recruit from South Florida with multiple FBS scholarships was shot to death this week in Miami Gardens after what his mother described to WPLG-TV as an argument about a video game at a childhood friend's house. Joshua Ancrum was 17.
A 16-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter in the shooting, a Miami Gardens police detective told The Miami Herald.
A rapidly rising three-star cornerback in the class of 2020, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings, Ancrum had offers from South Florida, Florida International, Southern Miss and Bowling Green.
However, according to USA Today, there was speculation that he likely could have expected more interest after an impressive showing at the Miami regional edition of The Opening.
"We are saddened at the news of Joshua's passing," Florida International coach Butch Davis said in a statement to WPLG-TV. "We at FIU will be praying for his family, friends and teammates in these trying times."
Ancrum would have been a junior at Miami Norland High School in the fall.
The rising junior defensive back also starred for the South Florida Express 7v7 team, which confirmed that Ancrum died in the Tuesday afternoon shooting.
"Today we are saddened to find out about the passing of one of our current players," the team's Twitter account read. "Josh, you're (sic) funny and charismatic attitude will forever live in our hearts. You will never be forgotten and will be missed."
