The Maryland football team has shut down all team activities because of an elevated number of COVID-19 cases on the team, the school announced Wednesday.

As a result, Saturday’s game against No. 3 Ohio State has been canceled. It will not be rescheduled.

Maryland becomes the second Big Ten school to pause team activities since the conference opened play on Oct. 24. No. 13 Wisconsin canceled games against Nebraska and Purdue the past two weeks and will resume action against Michigan.

The cancellation affects the Terps (2-1), who have won back-to-back games with Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa.

More attention, however, will be focused on what this means for the Buckeyes (3-0), the three-time defending Big Ten champions who are favored to win the conference again.

The Big Ten is playing an eight-game conference schedule with no bye weeks, and the conference requires that teams play in at least six games to reach the conference championship game.

Maryland is scheduled to play Michigan State on Nov. 21 and No. 10 Indiana on Nov. 28.

The Buckeyes now will have a bye week before what could be a top-10 showdown with the Hoosiers on Nov. 21. Ohio State plays Illinois, Michigan State and Michigan in its last three games.
