The LSU team that will take the field against Mississippi State on Saturday isn't the one that won the 2019 College Football Playoff championship. And yet, he sixth-ranked Tigers should be favored in the vast majority of their 2020 games.
Gone are quarterback Joe Burrow, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, receiver Justin Jefferson and 11 other players taken in the 2020 NFL Draft. Gone are 2019 Biletnikoff winner Ja'Marr Chase and defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin to COVID-19 opt-outs. Yet even with those losses, coach Ed Orgeron still has one of the most talented rosters in the SEC, with players such as Myles Brennan at quarterback, Derek Stingley Jr. at cornerback and North Dakota State grad transfer Jabril Cox at linebacker. The talent, while young, is still there.

Still, LSU's season-opener will feature a curious opponent: Mississippi State, which lost its last two visits to Baton Rouge by an average of only 9.5 points per game. The Bulldogs last won at LSU in 2014, as an unranked team, against the eighth-ranked Tigers. Could Mike Leach win a stunner in his SEC debut against the defending national champions? If so, then his Air Raid offense will need to fire on all cylinders with Stanford transfer K.J. Costello at quarterback.
