Joe Burrow has been named LSU's starting quarterback in the Tigers' Week 1 game against Miami.

A graduate transfer from Ohio State, Burrow joined the LSU program in May. He will have two seasons of eligibility in Baton Rouge.

A native of The Plains, Ohio, and a four-star recruit coming out of high school, Burrow played in 10 games between 2016 and 2017, throwing for 287 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He did not start a game during his stint in Columbus. He transferred after the emergence of quarterback Dwayne Haskins at Ohio State.

Tigers coach Ed Orgeron declined to name Burrow the team's starter over the summer, despite a clear indication he would take the first snaps of the season. Instead, he declared an open competition heading into fall camp, which was thinned to a two-man race last week when fellow quarterbacks Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillen both announced their intent to transfer. Burrow eventually beat out sophomore Myles Brennan — Etling's backup last season — for the starting position.

"Burrow came in here very low key, competed at every event," Orgeron told The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.). "I remember the first day we ran our conditioning test, and he was first in a bunch of sprints and didn't say a word. In the film room, on his own, studying. In the weight room, working hard.

"When he had a chance to, he took command of the offense, showed leadership. He made some mistakes — wasn't perfect ... he showed true leadership and an ability to command the offense."

LSU finished its 2018 campaign at 9-4, which culminated in a 21-17 loss to Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl. Three LSU quarterbacks last year combined for 179 of 299 throwing for 2,645 yards and 17 touchdowns to four interceptions.
