Georgia vs. LSU: Tigers earn statement win over Bulldogs image

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow received widespread criticism following his three-turnover performance against Florida last week. So, as he led LSU to a 36-16 win over No. 2 Georgia on Saturday, he made sure to soak up the positive attention in Baton Rouge.

Burrow pounded his chest and pointed at the crowd after giving the Tigers a 17-point lead with about nine minutes remaining after his second rushing touchdown of the game. Later, he sealed the win with a 59-yard read-option carry. He finished 15 of 30 for 200 yards through the air and amassed 66 yards on the ground.

LSU is now back in contention for a College Football Playoff appearance despite its recent loss to the Gators, though it would likely need to beat Alabama on Nov. 3 to get there. The Tigers now have three top-15 wins.

Here's how LSU claimed the victory (all times ET):

Final: LSU 36, Georgia 16

7:03 p.m.: Now it's over. LSU runs out the rest of the clock to cap a big-time victory.

6:59 p.m.: Fromm throws an ugly interception. This one looks over.

6:55 p.m.: Touchdown. Brossette finishes the job. LSU extends its lead to 36-16.

6:54 p.m.: Burrow has wheels! He carries it 59 yards on a read-option to set up first-and-goal.

6:48 p.m.: Touchdown. Georgia responds with a score, as Fromm connects with Riley Ridley. The Bulldogs still trail 29-16 with six minutes remaining.

6:44 p.m.: Field goal. Tracy makes his fifth kick of the contest. LSU is pulling away, with the Tigers now ahead 29-9.

6:38 p.m.: Fumble! That might be the end of Georgia's comeback hopes. Mecole Hardman coughs it up on the kickoff, and LSU recovers the ball.

6:34 p.m.: Touchdown. Burrow gets his second touchdown run of the game. He beats his chest and points to the crowd. LSU is up 26-9 with about nine minutes left.

6:33 p.m.: Burrow guns it all the way into the red zone! Jefferson hauls it in on the run.

6:31 p.m.: The Tigers get a much-needed 19-yard run by Edwards-Helaire and can now eat up more clock. Edwards-Helaire is past the 100-yard mark.

6:27 p.m.: LSU answers with a huge coverage sack to take Georgia out of field goal range. The Bulldogs punt.

6:22 p.m.: Here comes Georgia! Hardman returns a punt 27 yards, positioning the Bulldogs to cut further into their deficit.

Third quarter: LSU 19, Georgia 9

6:17 p.m.: End of third quarter.

6:13 p.m.: Touchdown. Holyfield runs it in from 10 yards out. The 2-point conversion attempt is unsuccessful. LSU has a 19-9 advantage with seven seconds left in the third quarter.

6:06 p.m.: Georgia is digging into its bag of tricks as it tries to claw back. A flea flicker throw down the sideline nearly puts the Bulldogs in the red zone, but a replay review overturns the catch.

6:01 p.m.: Field goal. LSU regains the margin it brought into halftime. There are three minutes left in the third quarter. The Tigers are up 19-3.

5:58 p.m.: For the FOURTH time in this game, LSU converts on fourth down. Burrow takes a fourth-and-inches carry past the marker.

5:55 p.m.: Intercepted by LSU! A diving pick withstands replay review and the Tigers get the ball at Georgia's 23-yard line.

5:39 p.m.: Spin cycle! Michael Divinity Jr. makes a move to sack Fromm and kill Georgia's drive. The Bulldogs settle for a field goal. LSU leads 16-3.

5:31 p.m.: The second half is underway. Georgia starts with the ball.

Halftime:

5:23 p.m.: This says it all for the Bulldogs right now.

5:19 p.m.: Here are some halftime stats:

Total yards: LSU 246; Georgia 124

Joe Burrow: 10 of 19 passing for 136 yards; eight rushes for two yards and a touchdown
Jake Fromm: 5 of 16 passing for 47 yards

Rushing: LSU 26 rushes for 110 yards, one touchdown; Georgia 16 rushes for 77 yards
Turnovers: LSU 0; Georgia 0
Third downs: LSU 4 of 12; Georgia 2 of 8
Fourth downs: LSU 3 of 3; Georgia 0 of 1

Second quarter: LSU 16, Georgia 0

5:09 p.m.: LSU takes a knee to run out the clock and take us to halftime.

5:01 p.m.: With 3:55 remaining in the half, Fromm is 2 of 11 passing for 20 yards. That's a problem for Georgia, which will need his arm to come back.

4:57 p.m.: Field goal. Cole Tracy nails another one. LSU is ahead 16-0.

4:54 p.m.: Another fourth-down conversion! That's the third successful try by LSU this half. The Tigers are in striking distance again.

4:48 p.m.: LSU is being aggressive despite its double-digit lead. The Tigers go for it on fourth down in their own half of the field, and they manage to move the chains. That was incredibly gutsy.

4:35 p.m.: Field goal. LSU tacks on to its surprising advantage. Can the visiting Bulldogs get back into this? The Tigers lead 13-0.

4:33 p.m.: Whoa! LSU with ANOTHER long passing play to enter Georgia territory again. Burrow found Justin Jefferson wide open, as Georgia's coverage was virtually nonexistent.

4:29 p.m.: Georgia's passing game has done very little so far. Fromm is 2 of 9 for 20 yards. The Bulldogs are forced to punt.

4:24 p.m.: Touchdown. After coming juuuuust short of the goal line on third down, LSU goes for it on fourth down and Burrow pounds it in himself with a keeper. After untangling from the scrum, the quarterback turns to the crowd and pumps his fist. LSU is up 10-0.

First quarter: LSU 3, Georgia 0

4:14 p.m.: Big run by LSU to end the first quarter! Clyde Edwards-Helaire goes 46 yards to set up first-and-goal.

4:07 p.m. — Fake field goal! What was that?! LSU completely shut down this attempted run by the Bulldogs kicker to take over possession.

4 p.m.: Running backs D'Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield are dragging the Bulldogs down the field with powerful ball-carrying. On one run, Holyfield barrelled over an LSU defender.

3:53 p.m.: Field goal. LSU settles for three points after Burrow's accurate throw to Marshall put the Tigers deep into Georgia territory. LSU leads 3-0.

3:50 p.m.: Deep ball for Burrow! He finds Terrace Marshall Jr. for 37 yards down the sideline, and LSU is now in business.

3:44 p.m.: Tight end Isaac Nauta makes a 19-yard catch over the middle to move the Bulldogs near midfield, but on an ensuing third-and-10, Fromm overthrows wide receiver Mecole Hardman streaking toward the end zone. Hardman was completely open. A missed opportunity there.

3:42 p.m.: And LSU does nothing with its first possession. A three-and-out gives Georgia a chance to strike first.

3:40 p.m.: Kickoff. LSU starts with the ball.
