Former Maryland and Delaware football player David Mackall was shot and killed in Baltimore on Wednesday, according to The Baltimore Sun . He was 28 years old and the father of two young children.
Baltimore police officers responded to a report of a shooting at 2:46 p.m. ET in the 1900 block of Braddish Ave. Once authorities arrived, they found Mackall suffering from gunshot wounds to his head and torso. He was taken to a nearby hospital but later died.
Current Maryland coach Mike Locksley linked to a story about Mackall's death in a tweet and added a plea to the community: "Hate seeing headlines like this....Prayers to his family and friends....The violence has to STOP!!!"
Mackall was a member of Maryland's football team during the 2010 and 2011 seasons before transferring to Delaware to finish his college career. The linebacker appeared in 20 games for the Terrapins and recorded 48 tackles with six sacks and an interception throughout his first two seasons, though he was suspended for the last four games of his sophomore year.
Mackall missed his junior season to an injury, but started 10 games for Delaware in 2013. He ranked third on the team with 75 tackles (34 solo) and was second with eight tackles for loss, according to the school's website . He proved to be a strong pass defender as he had an interception and three pass breakups in addition to a forced fumble.
Police have not named a suspect and nobody has been arrested in connection to Mackall's death.
