Deion Sanders put it succinctly when he was reached by ESPN's Quint Kessenich after Colorado's game against Colorado State.
"We started off playing like hot garbage, but we got it right, and we got the victory in the end, and that's all that counts," Sanders said.
It wasn't pretty. Well, at least it wasn't for approximately 58 minutes of game time. But all that mattered was that in the end of a wild, chaotic double-overtime contest between two heated rivals, it was Sanders' squad that came out on top, backed by a super hero performance late by Shedeur Sanders in a stunning 43-35 victory to stay undefeated.

Shedeur Sanders finished 38-for-47 for 348 yards with four touchdowns and 1 interception. Travis Hunter was injured in the first half and did not play after halftime.
In the Buffaloes' first real test as the hunted, entering as 23-point favorites against the Rams, Jay Norvell's squad gave Sanders' team all it could handle. Colorado began the game with a pick-six from Shilo Sanders, but a touchdown pass from wide receiver Tory Horton to tight end Dallin Holker and a scoop-and-score by Ron Hardge III gave the Rams the early 14-7 lead.
Shedeur Sanders tied the game before the end of the quarter, but in the second, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi connected with Louis Brown for a 15-yard, go-ahead score. Colorado booted a field goal early in the fourth quarter, but Fowler-Nicolosi tossed his second touchdown of the game, this one to Holker, to push the Colorado State lead to 28-17.

It sure felt at this point like the wind was out of the sails for the storybook Buffaloes. Colorado settled for another field goal with 7:33 left, but Colorado State kept piling up first downs and drained 5:27 off the clock before its drive stalled with 2:06 left. And when Paddy Turner's punt rolled out of bounds at the Colorado 2, it felt a comeback could be bordering on impossible.
But here's the thing: with Shedeur Sanders under center, Colorado can feel like nothing's impossible. And indeed, the junior quarterback shined, driving the Buffaloes down the field on seven plays to reach the end zone in just 1:30, tying the game on a touchdown to Jimmy Horn Jr. for a 45-yard touchdown. He then found Michael Harrison for the game-tying two-point conversion.
Shedeur Sanders did not shed that coat when he reached overtime. Instead, he led the Buffaloes on a four-play touchdown drive in the first overtime, ending with a three-yard touchdown pass to Harrison. When Colorado State tied up the game, he did it again, taking three plays before his 18-yard connection with Harrison resulted in the go-ahead score. A two-point conversion just added on. And at this point, the defense bowed up and kept Colorado State out of the end zone.
"To be great, you're going to have to be resilient," Sanders said after the game. "You got to overcome adversity. That was a tremendous amount of adversity that we overcame."

All the more impressive with the Buffaloes' win was that it was done largely without star Travis Hunter. The team's top corner and dangerous receiving threat, Hunter was hit late by Henry Blackburn in the first quarter, and though he returned briefly after the play, he wound up having to go to the hospital and did not return in the second half of the contest.
Colorado State certainly did itself no favors. Though it out-gained Colorado 499-418 in total yards, it also racked up a whopping 17 penalties for 187 yards, several of which came in critical moments that stifled drives or erased scores.

1:36 a.m.: Morrow rushes for two, then loses two and Colorado uses the first of its three second-half timeouts ahead of a third-and-10 play for the Rams. With 3:01 left, it's getting late fast for the Buffaloes.

1:23 a.m.: Sanders has the Buffaloes moving with scrambles of eight and seven yards, and later hits Weaver for a gain of eight. A big rush of 19 yards by Edwards up to the Colorado State 33 and a scramble by Sanders to the 24 have the Buffaloes rapidly moving up the field.

12:28 a.m.: Colorado State will start from its own 36.

12:26 a.m.: Edwards returns the kickoff out to the Colorado 24.
12:21 a.m.: Second half is getting closer. In the meantime, here are some key stats. Colorado State out-gained Colorado 262-85 in total yards and has 12 first downs to Colorado's five. The Rams also have nearly double the time of possession at 18:16 to Colorado's 9:39.
Why isn't Colorado State leading by more? Part of that has to be penalties. While the Buffaloes have five for 46 yards, the Rams have a whopping 11 for 133 yards.

12:03 a.m.: Kamara sacks Sanders, and that will do it for the first half. Colorado State blanks Colorado in the second quarter.

11:48 p.m.: The Rams appeared to take a touchdown lead, but the score is nullified by a block below the waist penalty that backs up Colorado State to the Buffaloes 19. Still goal-to-go. Penalties continue to be a huge problem, particularly for Colorado State, which has nine penalties for 103 yards.
11:47 p.m.: Morrow with back-to-back runs of three yards to set up a first-and-goal from the Colorado 4.
11:45 p.m.: Ross-Simmons is the latest to take a short crossing route a long way, running out to the right sideline for a pickup of 17. Fowler-Nicolosi then finds Horton up the middle. He makes a man miss before getting brought down for a pick up of six.

11:39 p.m.: Runs by Fowler-Nicolosi and Morrow gain four and zero, respectively, bringing up a third-and-6 with just under 10 minutes left in the half.
11:38 p.m.: Morrow starts the drive with a gain of seven, then Fowler-Nicolosi hits Brown on a crossing route out to the 29 for a pickup of 11. First down Rams.
11:36 p.m.: Colorado State will start its drive from its own 11 after the punt.
11:33 p.m.: Pressure getting to Sanders more now, with him throwing short passes to Edwards on back-to-back plays, picking up only two yards combined. He then runs out for a pickup of 15 yards up to the Buffaloes' 42. Defensive lineman Mohamed Kamara, one of Colorado State's best defensive players, is down on the field and is being looked at by trainers.
11:31 p.m.: Sanders picked up decent yardage on a run, but this play is moving backwards after a face mask by an offensive lineman. Buffaloes now facing a first-and-25.
11:28 p.m.: Colorado will start at its own 40 after taking a fair catch on the punt.
11:27 p.m.: Johnson picked up only three on the first play of the drive, and after a great open-field tackle by Justus Ross-Simmons limiting a receiver to one and an incompletion out right, the Rams will have to punt.
11:21 p.m.: Colorado punts the ball away one time, but it's called back on an illegal formation. The second punt is caught off a bounce by Horton, and he's brought down at the Colorado State 15.
First quarter
11:17 p.m.: Sanders is nearly picked off trying to throw over the middle to Jimmy Horn as the first quarter comes to an end.
11:16 p.m.: Edwards blazes up the middle for a pickup of 10 to start the drive before catching a short pass in the flat for no gain.
11:14 p.m.: Some short plays, another false start, and Fowler-Nicolosi being forced out of bounds for a loss of one, and Colorado State will have to punt. Colorado will start at the 20 with 1:05 left in the quarter.
11:11 p.m.: Colorado State kicks the drive off with a short pass to Horton, who picks up 12 yards up to the Rams' 43 with 3:23 left in the first. A false start moves them back five yards before the start of the next play, however.
11:07 p.m.: Long return by Johnson on the kickoff is spoiled at the end by a fumble, though it appears Colorado State recovered it at the Rams' 31. A scrum broke out after the play, and another flag is thrown. Offsetting unsportsmanlike conducts for the two teams.
11:05 p.m. Colorado scoring play: After picking up just two yards on the next two downs, Sanders fires a 24-yard strike to Xavier Weaver, who raced down the middle of the field on a seam route, in the end zone for the equalizing touchdown. Colorado 14, Colorado State 14
