The first week of college football has come on and gone. And at least among ranked teams, not much happened.
Though there were a litany of upsets with Tennessee being taken down by Georgia State, Nevada kicking off Purdue, Memphis shutting down Ole Miss and Wyoming outscoring Mizzou — sorry, SEC, it was not a great week for the non-powerhouses — most of the rest of weekend slate just about went chalk. The only ranked team that lost was No. 11 Oregon, which fell in a Saturday night thriller to No. 16 Auburn and freshman quarterback Bo Nix.
The rankings this week will set up what could be a full slate of action this weekend, however. Texas A&M, previously ranked No. 12, will travel to face No. 1 Clemson on Saturday and ESPN's "College Gameday" will be in Austin, Texas, to watch two top-10 teams fresh off blowouts squaring off in LSU vs. Texas. No. 5 Ohio State will also face a sturdier test when it welcomes former interim head coach Luke Fickell and the Cincinnati Bearcats, who are fresh off a win against UCLA on Saturday.
SN's RANKINGS: LSU moves into top five ahead of Texas showdown
The polls are not expected to shift around too much. Sure, a few teams will drop here and there for maybe less convincing blowouts than others, but turnover in Week 1 is never usually all that expected to happen.
But with a few ranked matchups coming up, these rankings could give college football fans a glimpse about where their teams stand this early into the season and what their teams potentially have to see for there to be any major changes.
