With the Georgia Bulldogs capping off the college football season by claiming its second-straight National Championship, are the odds in its favor to pull off a three-peat? Only one school has ever accomplished that feat (Minnesota 1934-1936), but it's still never been done in the CFP era.
Caesars Sportsbook released their initial odds to win the 2024 National Championship, and it's not surprising to see the back-to-back champs (+375) atop the odds board. Two other annual contenders, Alabama (+550) and Ohio State (+650), have the next best odds to end the Bulldogs' reign as top dog.
Along with entering the season as the No. 3 ranked team in the preseason AP Poll, Georgia also had the third-lowest odds to win the 2023 National Title behind Alabama and Ohio State. Despite losing some key pieces from its most recent National Championship run, it's likely the Bulldogs sit atop the preseason AP Poll next fall, as voters have to give Kirby Smart's program the respect it deserves.
For some futures bettors, taking a chalkier favorite isn't the most entertaining way to get action down on this market, so we've handpicked a couple of other schools that could contend for next season's National Championship. Lincoln Riley has Heisman winner Caleb Williams back for what's likely his final season, giving USC (+1000) some appeal despite its defensive struggles. Florida State (+1800) received the best possible news when QB Jordan Travis, WR Johnny Wilson, and EDGE Jared Verse announced they would be returning to FSU in 2023-24, making the Seminoles a legit contender to win their first National Championship since 2013-14.
If sprinkling some cash on the Trojans and Seminoles might not be juicy enough for bettors itching to find "this year's TCU" (+20000) in the preseason markets, fellow Big 12 rival Texas Tech is an intriguing long shot at +15000 and Mike Elko's Duke Blue Devils could present some value at +30000. As the odds indicate, they're long shots for a reason, but that's why they play the games.
It's still probably a bit early to bet into these futures markets, but if there's a price that's really catching your eye, getting a bet down now isn't the worst way to dish out a tiny fraction of your bankroll. Here's a snapshot of the early odds to win next season's National Championship.
