On Saturday, Clemson takes on Miami in a clash between two of the ACC's most historic programs.
The Tigers and Hurricanes have long been considered among the conference's elite. But 2023 has not been the most successful of seasons for these teams, who enter Saturday's clash with identical 4-2 records.
For Dabo Swinney's squad, it's been a year of transition. Cade Klubnik's insertion into the starting lineup has been unpredictable. The sophomore gunslinger has 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions this year. But seven of those scores came against Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic — hardly footballing powerhouses.
As such, it's been hard for Clemson to compete. The ACC is full of impressive passing talents. And although Klubnik has plenty of potential, his raw performances in losses to Duke and Florida State have paled in comparison to the QBs he's dueled against.
Miami is in much the same boat. Mario Cristobal has brought the program back into relevancy after the dark days of the Manny Diaz reign. A bowl game appears a real possibility, as well. But losses in each of their two conferences games — one of which came against ACC minnows Georgia Tech — hardly inspires confidence in the troops.
It may not have the same luster that it has in year's past. But make no mistake, the Hurricanes and Tigers' matchup means something. And although both sides find themselves lost in the mire of turmoil, one win can always right the ship.
