Bedlam: Mayfield dominates as Oklahoma takes shootout win in Stillwater image

When the dust settled in Saturday’s Bedlam shootout, it was Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners with enough firepower to win.

The Sooners won 62-52 as Mayfield went 24 for 36 with 598 yards and six total touchdowns. It's the third-straight Bedlam win for Oklahoma.

The Sooners defense stepped up late to stop the Cowboys on their last drive of the game. With just under a minute left, the Cowboys elected to go for it on fourth-and-12 from the 38-yard line instead of kicking a field goal to tie. Cowboys quarterback Mason Rudolph’s pass was incomplete, and the turnover on downs led the Sooners to score a touchdown and seal the win.

The win bolsters Oklahoma’s College Football Playoff campaign, especially on a weekend when many contenders were effectively eliminated after upset losses. Both Ohio State and Penn State suffered losses on the same night, and the Sooners' win eliminates the possibility for the Cowboys to make a claim.

Rudolph pushed Mayfield to the career day with his own impressive outing. Rudolph went 28 for 54 with 448 yards and five touchdowns, although failures late in the game allowed Oklahoma to defend the lead.

The Cowboys relied on their run game for production too, with 228 yards and two touchdowns from Justice Hill. Sooners running back Rodney Anderson ran for 111 yards and one touchdown, and Trey Sermon added another 81 yards and a touchdown.

The Sooners now improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big 12. With Iowa State’s loss, the Sooners are tied at the top of the conference with TCU. The Cowboys are left at 4-2 in the Big 12 to battle the Cyclones and the West Virginia Mountaineers for second.
