Army vs. Navy final score, results: Field goal delivers Army win in rivalry's first overtime game image

It was only fitting that a game with little to no offense delivered a spectacle in overtime.

In the first Army-Navy game to reach overtime, it took only two plays to send the clash to a second overtime. Army's Markel Johnson rushed for a 25-yard touchdown, followed by Navy's Xavier Arline connecting on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Maquel Haywood.

On the first series of the second overtime, the Midshipmen marched down the shortened field to the 1-yard line in seven plays, but then Anton Hall Jr. fumbled just before the goal line, giving Army the ball. The Black Knights played it safe after starting at Navy's 25, calling three run plays to set up Quinn Maretzki for a 39-yard field goal to give Army a 20-17 victory.

If college football fans have learned anything from the Army-Navy game in recent years, it's to never take their eyes off for any play. A critical fake punt was the deciding factor in 2021. In the 2022 edition, it was a blocked punt;  Army's Noah Short smothered the kick by Riley Riethman. Jabril Williams gathered the ball in the end zone for an Army touchdown to give the Black Knights a 7-3 lead.

It wasn't until Navy's second drive in the third quarter that offense would finally break out. Hall followed a block up the middle and burst through the line, taking off 77 yards for a touchdown to put Navy up 10-7.

But Maretzki had more than one chance to be the hero. Following a seven-play, 34-yard drive, Maretzki booted a 37-yard field goal with 1:53 left to tie the game, paving the way for the historic overtime.

Double overtime

6:45 p.m. Army scoring play: Maretzki's kick is good, and Army will win the first overtime Army-Navy game.

6:43 p.m.: Riley gets 2 yards to bring up a third-and-8. Ballard picks up a yard on the next play, and while there are penalty flags thrown, they are offsetting. Quinn Maretzki out for a 39-yard attempt.

6:42 p.m.: Navy stops the first Army run at the line of scrimmage.

6:41 p.m.: The ruling on the field stands. Army football. The Black Knights need a field goal to win.

6:39 p.m.: It appears Army has the football, but officials will review the play to see if the runner was down or in the end zone.

6:36 p.m.: Arline picks up two, but then is stopped a yard shy on the next play. Third-and-goal from the 3.

6:35 p.m.: Arline picks up six and a Navy first down, followed by a big run by Hall to the Army 4.

6:33 p.m.: Navy starts second overtime with the ball, and Arline is back to using his legs, rushing to the right for 4 yards. The next play is stopped for no gain at the line.

Overtime

6:31 p.m. Navy scoring play: Absolute insanity. Arline connects with a wide-open Haywood for a 25-yard touchdown pass. The PAT is just barely through the uprights and this game will go to a second overtime. Navy ties the game 17-17.

6:29 p.m. Army scoring play: Right away, the Black Knights strike. Johnson cuts through the left side of the line, and Army scores its first offensive touchdown of the game. Army takes a 17-10 lead.

6:28 p.m.: Army will start overtime on offense. Wondering how OT works? Here's all you need to know about the new format.

Fourth quarter

6:24 p.m.: For the first time in Army-Navy history, the game is headed to overtime.

6:23 p.m.: Navy tries a deep shot, and it comes up empty. Navy will have to punt facing a fourth-and-4 from its own 45. The punt rolls all the way to the Army 7 with six seconds left.

6:21 p.m.: Hall picks up seven yards on a run up the middle to bring up a third-and-4, and Navy uses another timeout with 23 seconds left. Army still has one timeout left, and could force a punt with a stop here.

6:20 p.m.: End-around doesn't work this time as Daniel Jones is stopped for a loss of one. Navy uses its first timeout at its own 38 with 35 seconds left.

6:19 p.m.: Impressive run on a sweep as Haywood breaks two tackles to get the edge and pick up a first down on a 13-yard carry.

6:18 p.m.: Arline gets just a yard on the carry up the middle, and Army calls a timeout with Navy facing a third-and-9 and 1:06 left in regulation.

6:17 p.m.: Arline keeps the ball for no gain up the middle.

6:14 p.m. Army scoring play: Ballard opts to keep the ball, but picks up only a yard. Army ties the game with a 37-yard kick with 1:54 remaining. Army ties the game at 10-10.

6:13 p.m.: After Ballard's four-yard run, Marshall takes a sweep to the outside and moves up three yards to bring up a third-and-3.

6:11 p.m.: Passing game again comes up clutch for Army as Harbour is called for a pass interference penalty on Marshall running down the field. Army moves up to the Navy 28 with the 15-yard penalty.

6:10 p.m.: The Army drive stays alive as Johnson gets two yards to the Navy 43.

6:10 p.m.: Johnson starts the Army drive with a run of five up the middle, and Ballard gets four on the next carry to bring up a third-and-1.

6:09 p.m.: Good Navy punt will send Army all the way back to its own 46.

6:06 p.m.: Haywood's run isn't enough to get a first down for Navy, bringing up a punt for the Midshipmen. False start backs them up five more yards before the punt. Navy takes a timeout.

6:05 p.m.: A pair of runs from Hall and Arline bring up a third-and-8 coming up.

6:01 p.m.: The punt rolls out of bounds at the Navy 5 with 7:31 remaining in the contest.

6:01 p.m.: Ballard throws a pass that's nearly picked in the middle of the field, but it falls incomplete. Army will have to punt on fourth-and-23.

6 p.m.: Murphy catches a short pass and takes it up two yards to bring up a third-and-23.

5:58 p.m.: Double reverse to Murphy loses a yard, and then an illegal blindside block backs them up even further. Army facing a first-and-25 at the Navy 49. Next pass attempt to Alston falls incomplete.

5:57 p.m.: Pass from Ballard out to Alston draws a pass interference penalty that moves them up to Navy's 34.

5:54 p.m.: Navy defense gets to Tyler in the backfield for a loss of a yard, and after the play, some confusion on the Army side forces Ballard to use a timeout.

5:51 p.m.: Army finally gets a completed pass as a wide-open Murphy catches a short pass and takes it up to the Navy 48. Officials reviewed for targeting, but confirmed there was no targeting on the field.

5:47 p.m.: Play-action set up, but no receivers are open. Arline starts to scramble and is able to get back to the line of scrimmage. Short punt by Navy spots the Black Knights at their own 26.

5:46 p.m.: Arline, clearly banged up after that trip at the end of the first half, is stopped after only a gain of two on the first play. Hall gets only about a yard on the next as Navy now faces a third-and-7.

5:43 p.m.: Navy will start at its own 47 after a good return by Hassan.

5:42 p.m.: Ballard tries for another deep shot, and it again falls incomplete. Army still has yet to connect on eight pass attempts. Punt from Army coming up.

5:41 p.m.: Play-action pass is a disaster as Tyler is sacked for a loss of 10, but Marshall gets 11 of those yards back on a powerful run up the middle. Third-and-9 coming up.

5:40 p.m.: Tyler's cut to the right is stopped for no gain, but Army decides to go for it from its own 15. Riley takes a sweep to the left and catches Navy by surprise, picking up just enough yardage to the 19 to keep the drive alive.

Third quarter

5:34 p.m.: Murphy takes a jet sweep seven yards out to the left, and came close to breaking one loose. Tyler's next run is stopped short after a pickup of just one, and Army will face a third-and-2 to start the fourth quarter in a three-point game.

5:32 p.m.: Arline tries a run to the right, and is stopped just a few inches shy of the marker. Navy punts on fourth-and-1, and Army will start at its own 5 after a great punt rolls up at the end.

5:31 p.m.: Arline picks up three and Terrell adds six more as Navy brings up a third-and-1. Terrell is hurt at the end of the play, and needs to be helped to the medical tent.

5:29 p.m.: John Marshall sacks Ballard as the Army quarterback looked to pass, and Army will have to punt. Navy will start its drive from the 35.

5:27 p.m.: Army opts to pass after starting at the 25, but the pass just in front of Tyler drops for an incompletion. Then, Tyler's stopped at the line of scrimmage on the next play, and he's slow to get up after the last play.

5:22 p.m. Navy scoring play: Another major change in momentum in the Army-Navy game. Hall sneaks through a hole in the middle of the line and is off for a 77-yard touchdown run. PAT gives Navy a three-point lead with 4:09 left in the third quarter. Navy takes a 10-7 lead.

5:20 p.m.: Navy will start its drive from its own 23.

5:17 p.m.: A second down run from Markel Johnson sets up a third-and-5. On the next play, a false start saves Army after a costly fumbled snap would have brought up fourth-and-long. But the snap immediately after the fumble catches Ballard by surprise. A scrum for the ball is eventually recovered by Army, but on fourth-and-35, the Black Knights have to punt.

5:15 p.m.: After a stop for no gain, Tyler runs to the left on an option and fights his way through contact to pick up five yards and a first down at the Navy 29.

5:14 p.m.: Tyler follows a pair of blockers down the left side and is nearly off to the races again before he's brought down four yards shy of the first-down marker. Army offense starting to really come alive.

5:12 p.m.: Tyler cuts through the left side of the line and is off to the end zone for a touchdown, but Army is called for an illegal block in the back that brings the run back. Then a false start backs them up further. Army facing a first-and-15 at the Navy 45.

5:08 p.m.: Arline can't get to the marker to gain for the first, falling three yards shy. Navy back out to punt from its own 27. Short kick is taken up the field nearly 20 yards by Cameron Jones as Army will again start in Navy territory.

5:07 p.m.: Arline gains four on the first play of the drive with a run to the left, then loses a yard keeping it on a rush to the right. Third-and-7 coming up for the Midshipmen.

5:04 p.m.: Punt goes into the end zone, so the net yardage wins up being just a 25-yard boot. Navy will take over at the 20.

5:02 p.m.: Great play by Marshall just to catch a pitch that was a bit high and behind him on a triple option, and he manages to bring it back to the line of scrimmage. Johnson's next carry gains only three yards, and Army will punt the football.

5:01 p.m.: Ballard comes in for what looks like a pass play, but decides to take the carry up the middle on a draw for a pickup of 11 up to the Navy 48. His second run is less successful as he's stopped at the line.

4:59 p.m.: Great run by Tyler out to the right for a pickup of 12 to start the drive, then takes a hard two-yard gain up the middle. Incomplete pass on the next attempt brings up third-and-7.

4:59 p.m.: Second half of the Army-Navy game is underway with the Black Knights taking the touchback.

Second quarter

4:38 p.m.: Jump-ball Hail Mary is batted down to end the first half. Army leads 7-3.

4:36 p.m.: Arline picks up a gain of four following a blocker to the right. He takes the option out to the right and takes off down the right sideline up to the Navy 47. Looks like a missed tripping penalty on the play that took him down.

4:34 p.m.: Terrell has a solid return on the kickoff, but a holding penalty brings it back. Navy will start its drive from the 15.

4:30 p.m. Army scoring play: Noah Short blocks the punt and Nathaniel Smith jumps on it in the end zone to give Army a stunning touchdown to take a lead with 1:06 left. Army takes a 7-3 lead.

4:28 p.m.: Fofana is stopped well short for a gain of five and Army calls a quick timeout with 1:16 before a Navy punt.

4:28 p.m.: Another penalty for Navy, this one for delay of game, brings up a third-and-14. Then the Midshipmen are called for a false start. That's three penalties on the drive for a team that averaged just 3.5 per game coming into the contest, the lowest among FBS teams in the nation. Third-and-19 coming up.

4:26 p.m.: Arline handles a high snap and nearly broke loose at the line, but he's pulled down by a defender for only a gain of four.

4:24 p.m.: Arline picks up two on a short run to the left, but a false start moves Navy back five before the second-down snap.

4:23 p.m.: Pitch from Ballard to Tyler on an option outside sets up a fourth-and-2, but Navy blows up the next Tyler run behind the line of scrimmage to turn the ball over on downs at the Navy 35.

4:21 p.m.: Great play by Army as Tyler fakes the handoff to Tyson Riley, who blocks a hole up the middle and allowed Tyler to rush up for a pickup of nine up the middle. Harbour stops the next Tyler run for no gain.

4:20 p.m.: Army will take snaps in Navy territory for the first time all game as the punt is stopped at the Navy 41. False start backs Army up five, however.

4:19 p.m.: Terrell can't get out wide and was unable to cut back to the middle. Navy forced to punt.

4:18 p.m.: Arline can only gain two yards on a physical run up the middle on the first play of the drive, and Fofana is stopped after only a yard up the middle on the second play. Army continues to make it tough to run up the heart of the field.

4:16 p.m.: Ballard comes in looking for a pass, but has to scramble for three. Army is forced to punt at its own 45. Navy calls for a fair catch at the nine.

4:13 p.m.: After a run for no gain, Tyler tries airing out another deep shot to the right side, but overshoots Braheam Murphy. He missed his tight end running wide open up the middle. Army so far is 0-for-5 on pass attempts. Navy uses a timeout with 7:44 left in the half and Army up to its own 42 facing a third-and-10.

4:12 p.m.: Tyler rushes for a pickup of six for the biggest gain of the day for Army, then rushes for a gain of one. On the third-down run, he slips his way through a hole and gains the first first down of the day for Army, and could have gone for more had he not been tripped up.

4:11 p.m.: Fair catch from Army will spot the Black Knights at their own 27.

4:06 p.m.: Running up the middle continues to be a problem for Navy. Anton Hall Jr. can gain only a yard on the second-down run, and Frey blows up another run up the middle by bringing down Fofana three yards behind the line on the next play as well. An injury to a Navy offensive lineman with a punt upcoming from Navy.

4:06 p.m.: Arline with a physical run as he bounces just off the left tackle for a pickup of seven.

4:03 p.m.: A big punt and short return of six from Hassan starts the Navy drive at the Midshipmen 34.

4 p.m.: Will Harbour blasts Tyler on an option for a loss of four in the backfield. Huge hit to start the Army drive. Next pass is a drop from Isaiah Alston that would have set up a manageable third down. Another pass falls incomplete, and Army goes three-and-out again. So far, Navy has out-gained the Black Knights 60-4 in total yards.

4 p.m.: Army takes the touchback and will start at the 25.

3:56 p.m. Navy scoring play: Every point counts, and Bijan Nichols gives Navy three with the long field goal that coasts in just inside the right upright. Midshipmen lead with 12:36 left in the half. Navy takes a 3-0 lead.

3:55 p.m.: Coming out of the timeout, Navy decides to go for the field goal from 44 yards out.

3:52 p.m.: Fofana's run sets up a fourth-and-2, and Navy opts to go for it rather than kick the field goal from the Army 26. Navy uses a timeout before the play.

3:50 p.m.: Good return by Amin Hassan set the Midshipmen up at the Army 35. Arlline then takes the first handoff to the left side for a pickup of two and Fofana is stopped after picking up only one.

3:48 p.m.: Ballard tries a surprising deep shot to Cole Caterbone, but the pass is broken up late. On a third-and-8 for Army, Ay'Jaun Marshall is targeted on a short pass attempt that sails high. Army with a second straight three-and-out, and now will punt from its own end zone.

First quarter

3:44 p.m.: Tyler takes the keeper up the middle for two yards as the first quarter comes to an end.

3:40 p.m.: Arline tries to run outside, but is stopped short. Looked like he had wide receiver Amin Hassan open on the left side, but didn't try for the pass. Navy again punts, and this one is caught at the Army 4.

3:38 p.m.: Fofana is stopped on the outside for a loss of four on the first down run and then is stopped for no gain on a run up the middle.

3:37 p.m.: Navy picks up the first down with a quarterback push up the middle.

3:37 p.m.: Fofana tries a run up the middle and is stopped just a few inches short of the marker. Navy is going to go for it on fourth down.

3:36 p.m.: Arline manages to get back to the line of scrimmage after a run outside is blown up, and Terrell gets the edge on the next play to bring up a third-and-2.

3:34 p.m.: Flea flicker back to Arline, who uncorks a deep shot down the middle of the field, draws a holding penalty on Army that moves Navy up 10 yards to the Army 47.

3:31 p.m.: Navy will start its drive at its own 43.

3:31 p.m.: Ballard tries a quarterback draw, and he's stopped for a gain of one. Army will punt after going three-and-out.

3:29 p.m.: Tyhier Tyler starts the drive with the ball, but he's stopped up the middle with a gain of two. Cade Ballard received the snap on the second straight play and again flips it to Tyler, but he is stopped five yards short of the marker.

3:26 p.m.: Navy tries to pin Army back, but the punt rolls into end zone for a touchback. All told, it's an 11-play, 37-yard drive for Navy that takes 7:41 off the clock.

3:26 p.m.: Arline tries a run up the middle, but he's stopped well short, only for a gain of two. Navy will punt from the Army 38.

3:25 p.m.: Officials decide there was not targeting on the play.

3:23 p.m.: This time, Haywood is stopped two yards behind the line of scrimmage as his rushing attempt to the outside is blown up. However, it appears officials are reviewing the play for targeting.

3:22 p.m.: Navy set back five yards on a false start, but Maquel Haywood picks up the five yards back to bring it back to a second-and-10.

3:21 p.m.: Army defensive end Chris Frey blows up the play, tackling Arline for a loss of four. That is the first time they've stopped Navy for a loss. But Arline makes up for it on the next play, appearing to set up a play-action pass before darting to the left and picking up the first down on a 17-yard run. Navy moves up to the Army 38.

3:20 p.m.: Fofana with another physical run along the outside, stiff arming a defender to pick up the first down along the sideline.

3:18 p.m.: Big run on the keeper by Arline as he rushes out to the Navy 45 to bring up another third-and-short, but in the process, his shoe came off.

3:14 p.m.: Navy tries to bounce a run outside with Vincent Terrell, but he is stopped after picking up only two yards. After the play, he is being looked at by trainers.

3:13 p.m.: Hard run up the middle by Daba Fofana picks up seven yards to set up a third-and-1 for the Midshipmen, which they pick up with Fofana again running up the middle for a yard.

3:12 p.m.: Quarterback Xavier Arline takes the first snap of the game up two yards.

3:12 p.m.: Navy takes the touchback, and this game will begin at the 25.

3:06 p.m.: Army and Navy have taken the field with the F/A-18 Super Hornets flying over.

3:03 p.m.: Time for the pregame ceremonies. Col. Keith Goode gives the invocation and the glee clubs of the U.S. Military and Naval academies sang the national anthem.

2:40 p.m.: Get to know five of the captains in the Army-Navy game ahead of this afternoon's clash.
