Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide find themselves in untamed pastures, having dropped a regular-season non-conference game for the first time in what feels like millennia. They will look to set things right against an upstart USF bunch hoping to set off a torrent of green-and-white at Raymond James Stadium.
Alabama looked turgid in its 34-24 loss to Texas last Saturday, unable to blot Quinn Ewers' influence. The Longhorns' sidewinder carved up that vaunted burgundy defense to the tune of 349 yards and three scores — all with relative ease. He looked worlds ahead of Crimson Tide starter Jalen Milroe, who dovetailed between flits of brilliance and moments of madness on the day.
The Tide get a chance to right the ship vs. USF, a team that has straddled between bad and awful over the past few years. In coach Alex Golesh, however, the Bulls have a tactician used to drawing up schemes against the SEC's best, including Alabama. Golesh was Tennessee's offensive coordinator over the past couple years. Under his tutelage, the Volunteers set fire to the program's record book in terms of offensive productivity.
It's been a work in progress for the 39-year-old at South Florida, his principles taking time to fully resonate among his youthful squad. But the enthusiasm is there. And there's nothing that brings more immediate favor to a new coach than an upset home victory over on the country's elite.
