Alabama linebacker Joshua McMillon's senior season could be over already.
Coach Nick Saban announced Monday afternoon that the projected starter suffered a right knee injury that will require surgery.
“Josh McMillon suffered an injury to his right knee Saturday that will require surgery and keep him out an indefinite period," Saban said in a statement (via the Tuscaloosa News). "We have a great medical staff here, and he will have the full support of everyone in the organization as he goes through the rehab process. We are confident Josh will make a full recovery.”
Although Saban didn't put a timeline on the redshirt senior's return, according to AL.com, which cited unidentified sources, McMillon likely out for the year after suffering a knee injury during a scrimmage on Saturday.
The report noted "it seems like there’s a small chance McMillon could return late in the season."
McMillon was expected to be a starter in 2019 after joining the Crimson Tide as a five-star recruit in 2015. He has totaled 19 tackles in 18 games over two seasons while playing on special teams and defense in a reserve role.
The fifth-year senior could appeal to the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility based on a medical exception.
The injury is the latest blow for Alabama after the team lost five-star freshman running back Trey Sanders to what is likely a season-ending foot injury in practice last week.
Alabama is scheduled to open the season Aug. 31 against Duke.
