By the numbers: Alabama's loss to Texas A&M ends long-running streaks image

Texas A&M stunned the college football world Saturday night.

The unranked Aggies, coming off back-to-back losses to Arkansas and Mississippi State that dropped them out of the AP Top 25, led most of the game against top-ranked Alabama but then fell behind late before ultimately tying the game and then winning on a walk-off field goal 41-38.

The loss not only shook up the landscape of the 2021 college football season, it also marked the end of several streaks for coach Nick Saban, the Alabama program and college football in general.

Here's a look at some of the major streaks that ended as a result of the Aggies' upset in College Station, Texas.

19

Alabama ran the table in 2020 with a 13-0 record and won the national championship. The Crimson Tide missed the College Football Playoff the previous year and lost its last regular-season game but ended the campaign with a win in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan.

After a 5-0 start this season, the Crimson Tide had won 19 in a row. That streak was snapped Saturday night.

24

That wasn't the only streak to be snapped Saturday. Saban came into the matchup 24-0 against his former assistants. Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher ended that run and put up one in the win column for the ex-assistants.

80

Saban has been a friend to sports bettors. In the previous 80 games that Saban's teams were favored by 10 points or more, he delivered with the win on the moneyline (i.e., straight up).

100

Alabama has punished unranked opponents. If a team didn't have a number next to its name, it wasn't going to win.

The Crimson Tide had won 100 consecutive game against unranked opponents dating to Saban's first season with Alabama in 2007. The last loss came in that inaugural season when Louisiana-Monroe won 21-14.

106

Not just the 100-game winning streak against unranked foes was snapped. The loss also ended a 106-game run of AP No. 1 teams beating unranked opponents.

The last time an unranked team took down the No. 1 team in the nation was in 2008 when Oregon State defeated No. 1 USC 27-21. In case you're wondering how far USC dropped in the poll after that loss, the Trojans were ranked No. 9 the following week.
