It's Iron Bowl week, so you know what that means: Throw out the rankings and the records. It's about to get wild.
No. 3 Alabama is considered a heavy favorite over Auburn, which is in the midst of a three-game skid after losses to Texas A&M, Mississippi State and South Carolina. The Tigers will also be without starting quarterback Bo Nix, who is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle. Backup T.J. Finley, a transfer from LSU, will start for Auburn.

One thing going for the Tigers is their recent history of success vs. Alabama in Jordan-Hare Stadium, where the game takes place once again in 2021. Auburn has beaten the Crimson Tide in three of its last home games, including the last two. It is worth mentioning, however, that the Tigers have only won in matchups where they were ranked.
Year | Outcome |
2019 | No. 16 Auburn 48, No. 5 Alabama 45 |
2017 | No. 6 Auburn 26, No. 1 Alabama 14 |
2015 | No. 2 Alabama 29, Auburn 13 |
2013 | No. 4 Auburn 34, No. 1 Alabama 28 |
That said, Alabama has looked nothing like world beaters in 2021, suffering from inconsistent play on both sides of the ball. The Crimson Tide may rank No. 3 in the country, but it's not unbeatable by any means. They will look to sophomore quarterback Bryce Young (264 of 368 passing, 3,584 yards, 38 touchdowns, three interceptions) to lead a victory over Auburn. Running back Brian Robinson (191 rushes, 945 yards, 14 touchdowns) will also be relied on heavily in the matchup.

Conversely, look for Auburn to rely on Finley (34 of 65 passing, 463 yards, three touchdowns) to lead the Tigers' effort. Expect to see heavy doses of running back Tank Bigsby (178 rushes, 940 yards, 10 touchdowns) as well: The sophomore is one of the most powerful rushers in the SEC and will test the interior of Alabama's defense, which has allowed big plays on occasion this year.
The Tigers also don't have anything to lose in this game, placing all the pressure on Alabama as it aims to stay alive in the College Football Playoff race. Will that affect how first-year coach Bryan Harsin calls this game?
