Duke vs. Vermont final score, results: Blue Devils quiet Catamounts in March Madness first-round win image

Duke hadn't landed in the win column in more than two weeks entering the first round of the NCAA Tournament. But the Blue Devils still looked comfortable and confident Friday in a 64-47 win over No. 13 Vermont.

The game was far from the offensive performance head coach Jon Scheyer might have wanted, as Duke was held to 33% shooting from 3-point range while Kyle Filipowski was limited to three points. Defensively, however, the Blue Devils showcased the kind of prowess that can make a deep run possible.

Vermont shot just 38.5% from the field, and Duke's defense tightened the screws as the game went on. The Catamounts were held to 18 second-half points, including just three over the final seven minutes.

Mark Mitchell and Jared McCain took center stage for Duke with Filipowski on the back burner, with each scoring 15 points. After the game, Scheyer praised Filipowski's impact despite the quiet night offensively. The sophomore finished with 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in the win.

Duke hasn't suffered a first round loss since 2014, but Scheyer will enter Sunday in search of his first trip to the Sweet 16 in his second season as the program's head coach. The Blue Devils will face either No. 5 Wisconsin or No. 12 James Madison.

Duke vs. Vermont results, highlights from 2024 March Madness

(All times Eastern)

Final: Duke 64, Vermont 47

9:17 p.m. — That'll do it! Duke wins comfortably and advances to the second round to face either Wisconsin or James Madison. The Blue Devils haven't lost in this round since 2014.

9:14 p.m. — Long is helped to the locker room unable to put weight on his injured leg. Meanwhile, Duke is 65 seconds away from the victory.

9:12 p.m. — Vermont's TJ Long is down in serious pain after his knee appeared to buckle.

9:10 p.m. — It's cruise control for Duke, now up 15 with under 90 seconds remaining. Vermont has been held to 18 points in the second half.

9:03 p.m. — Proctor and Jeremy Roach miss back-to-back threes to avoid putting the game totally out of reach for Vermont, but it's looking bleak for the Catamounts with 3:15 on the clock. 58-47, Blue Devils.

8:57 p.m. — Proctor puts momentum right back on Duke's side with a three of his own. The Blue Devils lead by nine with under six minutes remaining.

8:53 p.m. — There's some life for Vermont: Bogues hits a three to cut the lead to six. It's 50-44, Blue Devils with under eight minutes on the clock.

8:52 p.m. — Vermont has fallen behind by 11, trailing 50-39. The Catamounts have yet to make a 3-pointer in the second half and simply can't get shots to fall.

8:45 p.m. — McCain ends a scoring drought for Duke and extends the Blue Devils' lead back to 7. Vermont has been unable to take advantage of stops on the other end.

8:39 p.m. — Vermont averages only 8.6 turnovers per game, but the Catamounts are already up to 10 tonight. That's been the difference.

8:31 p.m. — Jared McCain drills a pivotal three to push Duke's lead back to five. Vermont is going to the line with a chance to make it a one-possession game again after the under-16 timeout.

8:29 p.m. — Shamir Bogues gets to the basket and picks up an and-one opportunity. His free throw cuts the Blue Devils' lead to two.

8:28 p.m. — Both teams are struggling with outside shots to start the half, keeping it at a 36-31 Duke lead more than three minutes in.

8:25 p.m. — Duke and Vermont trade baskets in the opening minute of the first half.

End of first half: Duke 34, Vermont 29

8:00 p.m. — Duke nearly finished the half on a great run, but a stop and a nice shot by Aaron Deloney keeps the deficit at five for Vermont.

7:58 p.m. — Bogues misses the free throw, and Jared McCain drills a three. That's a big sequence for Duke, which now leads by five.

7:56 p.m. — Vermont is in this, with four consecutive made field goals. The latest is an and-one opportunity for Shamir Bogues to potentially cut the deficit to one.

7:52 p.m. — Here come the Catamounts, as Ian Eagle says. Vermont's TJ Hurley drills a three to cut the deficit to five heading into the under-4 media timeout. 28-23, Duke.

7:49 p.m. — Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers! The ball is flying all over the court, and the latest sequence ends with an unsuccessful trip to the free throw line for Vermont's Shamir Bogues. The Catamounts' offense is not flowing right now.

7:42 p.m. — A Mark Mitchell dunk extends Duke's lead to 10, with a foul on Jeremy Roach sending the game to the under-8 timeout. Vermont has had problems on both ends of the floor early on and has to avoid letting this one get away. 26-16, Duke.

7:38 p.m. — Proctor picks up his second foul and subs out, but Vermont has yet to shoot a free throw. It's 22-16, Duke.

7:35 p.m. — The free throw count: 10 for Duke, 0 for Vermont. The Blue Devils have figured out how to get to the line, though they're only shooting 60 percent in that department.

7:27 p.m. — Vermont coach John Becker was hit with a technical foul during the media timeout, while sharing his thoughts with an official. That will put the Catamounts in an even deeper hole.

7:24 p.m. — Vermont is having trouble getting stops, and Duke is starting to feel it from beyond the arc. Tyrese Proctor drills a three to put the Blue Devils up by four.

7:18 p.m. — Duke takes control by getting to the basket, jumping out to a 6-3 lead, but back-to-back Vermont baskets including an Aaron Deloney three push the Catamounts back in front.

7:11 p.m. — We are underway after a couple thrilling finishes elsewhere, and Vermont starts with a three to take a 3-0 lead.

6:20 p.m. — Brooklyn has seen both ends of the spectrum today: An exciting overtime battle between FAU and Northwestern, and UConn's complete destruction of Stetson. Ian Eagle, Bill Raftery and Grant Hill will be hoping for at least a more competitive game than the latter.

5:50 p.m. — Duke officially ruled freshman Caleb Foster out for the season yesterday with a stress fracture in his ankle. Foster hadn't played since Feb. 24 and averaged 7.7 points per game on 43.7 percent from the field.

5:40 p.m. — The winner of this game won't know its opponent until later in the night, as Wisconsin and James Madison will face off about 30 minutes after this battle ends.
