Who should make the 2019-20 All-NBA teams?

Who should make the 2019-20 All-NBA teams? image

All-NBA is one of the single most important honours the NBA hands out every year.

Want to know who dominated an era in NBA history that you weren't alive to see? Take a look at the All-NBA nods a player has.

This era, however, is becoming increasingly difficult to choose who should be named one of the top 15 players in the league. With positionless basketball now fully ingrained in our game, All-NBA doesn't always necessarily feature the best 15 players from said season.

Hopefully in the near future that will change, but for now we're stuck choosing two guards, two forwards and a centre.

I've taken on the challenge of selecting my All-NBA Teams for the 2019-20 season. The season isn't over and with eight games remaining we may have some movement, but I've seen enough basketball this season to feel comfortable making my selections. Also, this isn't an official vote, but rather my opinion on how things should shake down.

So without further ado, here are my predictions for All-NBA.

First Team

#CP3

G: Chris Paul
G: James Harden
F: LeBron James
F: Giannis Antetokounmpo
C: Nikola Jokic

The one that will stick out here to most is Chris Paul over Luka Doncic. I wrote earlier in the break why I believe Paul is an All-NBA First Teamer and for me it's simple. If we're going to reward the best players in the league for that season, we have to take into account what they do on both ends of the floor. Doncic is not the defender CP3 is and he may never be — that's not his game or where he'll be most valuable, but he's not even an average defender at the moment.

According to NBA Stats, Dallas plays its best defence with Doncic sitting on the bench. Nikola Jokic, who made my First Team, isn't exactly prime Tim Duncan defensively, but he's proven — especially in the playoffs last year — that he can be a decent defender when he needs to be. We're still waiting to see that from Doncic and it may come as quickly as this year's postseason, but we aren't there yet.

Look, Luka has been sensational this season. His averages of 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game have turned him from a promising rookie to a star in just one season and he'll make plenty of All-NBA First Teams in his career. He just won't make this one.

Second Team

#JokicEmbiid

G: Luka Doncic
G: Damian Lillard
F: Kawhi Leonard
F: Anthony Davis
C: Joel Embiid

There's always going to be an argument from Joel Embiid to be featured on First Team All-NBA, but the argument against will always be his lack of availability. Embiid has missed 21 games this season and even though we've become accustomed to him missing a good portion of the season, we can't move the goal post on our standards. 20-plus games are just simply too much to not be present for in an 82-game season.

That being said, Jokic left the door open for him with his poor start to the season, but since the start of December, he has been back to typical Joker form.

Tale of Two Jokers
Mins FG% 3P% Rebs Asts Pts
First 20 games 30.8 46.4 22.1 10.1 6.1 15.7
After 20th game 33.0 55.4 36.2 10.3 7.2 22.2

Third Team

PascalMiddleton

G: Russell Westbrook
G: Ben Simmons
F: Pascal Siakam
F: Khris Middleton
C: Bam Adebayo

Pascal Siakam should make his first All-NBA Team this season and what a ride it's been for him. From a G League project to a starter to an All-Star to All-NBA. My guy Micah Adams laid out the path for Siakam to earn the All-NBA nod, but there's no question to me that Siakam has been one of the 15 best players this season and he's playing on one of the three best teams record-wise in the league. Lock him in.

The guard spot was honestly the toughest for me to decide on.

The drop off from Doncic, Paul, Lillard and Harden is steep! Ultimately, I went with Westbrook, who pretty much plays centre for the Rockets, and Ben Simmons, who should get his fair share of Defensive Player of the Year votes.

I considered Donovan Mitchell here but upon further review of his numbers, including his 240th rank in RPM (-0.70) — which I know isn't the be all, end all — I felt weird to add him in as a top 15 player this season.

Trae Young's been awesome this season, but he had no shot of making my All-NBA list because of his team's performance. Let's not get it twisted, winning still matters.

I thought long and hard about adding Khris Middleton to Second Team All-NBA because he's been that good but ultimately couldn't put him over Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard.

And finally, Bam Adebayo is here at centre even though he's playing more forward than centre. Yeah, I cheated. So what? Would you rather me have Hassan Whiteside here? Wasn't going to happen.
