The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup is almost upon us, set to tip off in late August in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
As that date draws closer, countries are beginning to finalize their rosters.
The 12-man Team USA roster has been set for a few weeks, headlined by former No. 1 overall picks Paolo Banchero and Anthony Edwards. They'll be joined by up-and-coming stars such as Tyrese Haliburton, Brandon Ingram, Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr. as the United States look to bounce back from a poor seventh-place showing at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Team USA will begin training camp in Las Vegas in August, where they will go head-to-head against a "Select Team" of other American NBA stars in preparation for the tournament. If the thought was to use the Select Team as a punching bag, however, then Team USA was sorely mistaken — especially after losing a pair of scrimmages to the team on Friday, Aug. 4.
What is the Select Team, and who is on the roster? The Sporting News has you covered below.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Cunningham — who suffered a season-ending shin injury during the 2022-23 season — was invited to play for the United States Senior National Team but declined to focus on making a full recovery for the upcoming NBA season.
According to a report from NBC Sports, the USA Select Team beat the World Cup team in a pair of 10-minute scrimmages on Friday. The outlet noted coach Steve Kerr was trying out several combinations and didn't treat the scrimmages as he would a game.
What is the USA Select Team?
The Select Team is a 12-man roster that is typically made up of younger prospects who could be the next generation of potential candidates for the United States Senior National Team. They will travel to Las Vegas to practice and scrimmage against the senior team to help them prepare for the upcoming tournament.
It's important to note that in the event that someone on Team USA cannot suit up for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup — due to injury or any other reason — players from the Select Team can be promoted to the senior team.
