Changes are coming to the NBA's health and safety protocols.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that the league is set to clear players and coaches from COVID-19 health and safety protocols provided testing data shows they are no longer at risk of passing on an infection to close contacts.

The new protocols, which will include vaccinated players, coaches and officials, will reduce the minimum quarantine period from 10 days to six.

The original rule that allowed players to test out of the protocol with two negative tests in a 24-hour period will remain unchanged.

The changes are reportedly based on research and data from infectious disease professionals regarding the length of time one remains capable of spreading the virus to close contacts.

The league has been hit by a raft of positive tests over the last few weeks, with Commissioner Adam Silver recently revealing that over 90 percent of recent positive tests are of the Omicron variant.

The change in the quarantine period could impact several high-profile players around the league who are currently in health and safety protocols.
