Nick Nurse contract details: Raptors head coach reportedly entering final year of deal in 2023-24 image

By now, it's no secret that the Raptors are the team to watch as the NBA trade deadline approaches on Thursday, Feb. 9.

With names like O.G. Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet swirling in trade rumors, Toronto is seen to be a "swing team" that could dictate just how chaotic the deadline gets this season.

The Raptors have underachieved to this point, sitting outside of the Play-In Tournament picture with a 23-28 record. They're only one game back from a Play-In spot and five games back from a top-six seed, but Toronto's inconsistent play has sparked the idea that it may be sellers at the trade deadline.

The next week and a half will be pivotal for the future direction of the franchise, and according to the latest report from The Athletic's Shams Charania, that could go beyond the players on the roster.

Charania reported that Raptors head coach Nick Nurse is set to enter the final year of his contract next season (2023-24), leaving Toronto's front office with another big decision to make this offseason.

Will the Raptors re-sign head coach Nick Nurse?

While there is no concrete answer to this question just yet, Charania did provide some context in his latest report.

"There’s been frustration throughout the roster and staff with the team’s play at points of this season, and that has been directed toward Nurse at times too, according to sources," Charania wrote.

It should come as no surprise that some of the blame for an underwhelming season would be placed on the head coach, but Nurse hasn't received much public criticism for the team's shortcomings until now.

Last season, when Nurse was linked to the Lakers as a potential head coaching replacement for Frank Vogel, Raptors president Masai Ujiri had this to say of Toronto's head coach: "No team has contacted me. I see all the stuff that you guys see. I dream like they dream. I want Messi. I want Ronaldo. I want Kobe Bryant. So they can keep dreaming. I dream too."

That doesn't sound like Nurse would be on the hot seat after one bad season, but if the Raptors elect to alter the team's future at the deadline, could that include a head coaching change? Only time will tell.

After leading the Raptors to the first championship in franchise history in 2018-19 and the highest winning percentage in franchise history in 2019-20, Nurse signed a "multi-year" contract extension in Toronto in 2020.

The extension was reported to be a four-year, $32 million deal that would keep Nurse with the Raptors through the 2023-24 season.

It is worth noting that Nurse is currently under contract as the Canada Men's Basketball National Team head coach through the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
