Matisse Thybulle contract details: Trail Blazers match Mavericks' offer sheet, keep wing in free agency image

Matisse Thybulle is staying in Portland.

The Athletic's Shams Charania reported on Wednesday that the restricted free agent would sign a three-year, $33 million offer sheet with the Mavericks, but the Trail Blazers matched that offer on Thursday, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

In his four NBA seasons, Thybulle has quickly developed a reputation as one of the league's best perimeter defenders, being named to the All-Defensive Second Team in 2021 and 2022. His offensive stats don't jump off the page, but he made considerable strides as a shooter once he landed in Portland, knocking down 38.8 percent of his 3-pointers in 22 games.

What will Thybulle's new contract look like? The Sporting News has more details below.

Thybulle signed a three-year, $33 million offer sheet with the Mavericks, but the Trail Blazers elected to match the offer. Thybulle's contract has an average annual value of $11 million.

His new deal will keep him under contract through at least the 2024-25 season. It includes an $11.5 million player option for the 2025-26 season, per Wojnarowski.

What is an offer sheet in free agency?

The Sporting News' Jordan Greer put together a glossary of common NBA free agency terms that is certainly worth checking out if you're a fan following along this offseason. One of those terms is "offer sheet."

If a restricted free agent decides that he wants to join another team, then he signs an offer sheet with the team. The original team is then presented with the terms of the deal and has two days to match the offer sheet.

If the original team matches the offer sheet, then the player stays with the original team under the terms of the offer sheet. The team making the offer must maintain enough salary cap space to acquire the player until the offer sheet is signed or the original team matches.
