Canada captured one of the biggest victories in the history of the men's basketball program on Sunday, defeating Spain in dramatic fashion to advance to the FIBA Basketball World Cup quarterfinals and qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
After trailing by 12 points at the end of the third quarter, the Canadians mounted a furious comeback, outscoring Spain 27-12 in the final frame on the way to an 88-85 win.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 30 points, adding seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. Dillon Brooks overcame early foul trouble to contribute 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.
Canada will now head to the quarterfinal round of the FIBA World Cup for the first time since 1994 and participate in the Summer Olympics for the first time since 2000.

11:20 a.m. — What a shot by Dillon Brooks. He drains a clutch 3-pointer from the wing to tie the game. Canada 80, Spain 80 with one minute remaining.

11:15 a.m. — Nickeil Alexander-Walker drills a 3-pointer from the corner, and Spain's lead is down to four. Spain 78, Canada 74 with three minutes left.
11:10 a.m. — Canada trims the deficit down to six, but it is missing some open looks from beyond the arc. The Canadians need to capitalize on these scoring chances.
11:05 a.m. — The officiating crew reviews a play in which Dillon Brooks appeared to hit Santi Aldama in the face, but it is just incidental contact. Fortunately for Canada, Brooks avoids another foul.
End of third quarter: Spain 73, Canada 61
11 a.m. — Spain ends the quarter with an alley-oop to push its lead to 12.
10:55 a.m. — Spain is back in control after rattling off a quick 7-0 run. Santi Aldama has been fantastic for Spain during this stretch.

10:45 a.m. — A 17-4 run allows Canada to take the lead. Canada has turned up the intensity on the defensive end. Spain is clearly frustrated with the officiating.
10:40 a.m. — And now Spain is dealing with foul trouble. Alex Abrines (four fouls), Juancho Hernangomez (three) and Willy Hernangomez (three) must be careful, as there is a lot of time left in this game.
10:35 a.m. — The foul calls have flipped to start the second half. Spain commits four fouls in the first two minutes of the third quarter.
Halftime: Spain 48, Canada 38
10:15 a.m. — Canada doesn't have an answer for Willy Hernangomez. The big man racked up 18 points in the first half on 6-of-11 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.
10:05 a.m. — RJ Barrett and Dillon Brooks both have three fouls. During a huddle, Jordi Fernandez tells his players not to worry about the officiating. He wants them to stay focused on what they can control.
10 a.m. — A terrific drive and left-handed finish from Dillon Brooks ties the game at 28 midway through the second quarter.

9:50 a.m. — RJ Barrett helps Canada survive a foul-filled first quarter, scoring 11 of his team's 21 points.
9:45 a.m. — More foul trouble for Canada. Kelly Olynyk now has two fouls after setting an illegal screen.
9:40 a.m. — Dillon Brooks picks up his second foul early in the first quarter. Brooks heads to the bench, and Luguentz Dort joins the rest of the starters.
9:30 a.m. — Spain scores on the opening possession of the game, but Dillon Brooks responds with a traditional 3-point play.
