Canada vs Germany score, results: Canadians comeback in OT to claim SuperCup 2023 in FIBA World Cup tune-up image

Canada got their revenge on Germany in the SuperCup Finals on Sunday. After losing to the Germans earlier in the week, Canada sneaked out a comeback win in overtime 113-112 in Hamburg.

RJ Barrett led all scorers with 31 points, which included what would turn out to be the game-winning basket when he finished a layup to give Canada a three-point lead with 1:30 remaining in overtime. Canada clamped down defensively from there on, culminating with Kelly Olynyk sealing the game with a block on Mo Wagner.

Olynyk did his part on both ends of the floor adding 21 points while shooting 54 percent from the floor in the win. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander battled through a poor shooting night going 8-for-22 from the field to deliver 25 points.

Germany was led by Raptors guard Dennis Schroder who controlled the game until he was subbed out with 6:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. At the time, Germany led 91-86 — head coach Gordon Herbert apparently made the call Schroder had done enough, allowing the second unit to play meaningful minutes.

Schroder finished the contest with 26 points, eight assists while shooting 60 percent from the field.

End of fourth quarter: Germany 101, Canada 101

2:41 p.m. — Final possession sees Andreas Obst pump fake to get free for 3 over SGA, but he missed it and we're going to overtime! 101 all, let's get some free hoops.

2:39 p.m. — After another missed Franz Wagner potential game-clinching shot, this time a two, RJ Barrett goes coast to coast and finishes a tough layup to tie the game! 101-101 with four seconds to play. Time out Germany.

2:36 p.m. — Wow! RJ Barrett took the ball off a missed Franz Wagner knockout blow 3 and drove the lane finished and got fouled. The score is 101-98 with 34.9 to play.

2:32 p.m. — Canada's offense down the stretch is just iso SGA and hope for the best. He's one of the best one-on-one players in the world so it's not a terrible option, but they'll need more come World Cup time. The score is 100-96 Germany with 1:10 to play in the game.

2:26 p.m. — Coming down to the wire in Hamburg. 99-95 Germany with 2:34 remaining in the game. Canada has just picked up their fifth team foul and they'll be in the penalty the rest of the way. Germany is also in the penalty.

2:21 p.m. — Kelly Olynyk is coming alive in the fourth. He has 19 points, eight of them coming in the fourth. His latest 3 bring the Germany lead down to two, 91-89 with 6:03 to play.

2:16 p.m. — Germany leaving the door open for a Canada comeback. They start the quarter jacking 3s and lazy offense. Germany is shooting 1-for-7 to start the frame. Canada is taking advantage of the poor shooting and has cut the lead to five. Germany up 89-84 with 7:08 to play.

End of third quarter: Germany 87, Canada 78

2:06 p.m. — Trae Bell-Haynes ends what was a poor quarter for Canada on a positive note, drilling a buzzer-beating 3. Canada trail 87-78 after giving up 38 points in the 10-minute frame. Germany is in complete control. The first five minutes of the fourth will show if Canada has any fight or if they'll take it on the chin and look forward to the next warm-up game.

1:49 p.m. — If you're wondering, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who was averaging 26-plus points in the two previous games, is having a stinker so far. Nine points on 3-for-12 shooting from the field in 18 mins. Canada down 72-64 with 4:32 to play in the third frame.

1:47 p.m. — Both Dillon Brooks and Lu Dort are on the floor and it still doesn't matter. Dennis Schroder is doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants to. Schroder has 26 points, eight assists while shooting 6-for-9 from the field.

Both Dillon Brooks and Dwight Powell are in foul trouble with four each. One more and they'll be gone. Germany leads 66-61 with 5:47 to play in the third.

1:39 p.m. — Off we go for the second half. Here are the starting lineups for both teams coming out of the break:

  • Canada: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dillon Brooks, RJ Barrett, Kelly Olynyk, Dwight Powell
  • Germany: Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis, Isaac Bonga, Johannes Voigtmann, Andreas Obst

Halftime: Germany 49, Canada 45

1:24 p.m. — That's the end of the first half. Canada responded better to Germany's physical play as time goes on. RJ Barrett is on a heater with 13 points while shooting 5-for-6 from the field in 14 minutes. Nickeil Alexander-Walker hasn't scored, he's 0-for-5 from the field but has given Canada good energy on defense and looked good as the primary playmaker with the second unit with two dimes

For Germany, Dennis Schroder is in complete control whenever he's on the floor. He has 15 points shooting 3-for-6 from the field. He also has six assists and has drawn five of the team's 16 fouls. Stopping Schroder in the second half will be key for the Canadians. With Dillon Brooks and Lu Dort on the team, Canada has options let's see how they use them. Germany leads 49-45.

1:20 p.m. — Zach Edey looks a bit tentative in his first minutes in this game. He's 7-4, 300-plus pounds, Canada would benefit if he played like it. With Edey in the game, Canada showed a bit of zone in the closing minutes of the first half.

1:15 p.m. — Zach Edey minutes!

1:12 p.m. — Transition play and they left RJ Barrett open on the wing for 3. He buries it and looks at his bench with a mean mug. Barrett is on fire and gives Canada the lead 40-39 with 2:57 to play in the half.

1:10 p.m. — You know those games that RJ Barrett has where he looks like an NBA All-Star? He's having one of those right now. Barrett scores over his defender and does the "he's too small" pose. Barrett has 10 points leads all scorers and he's perfect from the field. Canada still down 35-33 with 5:09 to play in the second.

1:05 p.m. — Germany puts an end to an 8-2 run that Canada started the period with. Franz Wagner hit a long two and Johannes Thiemann threw down a dunk. Canada Coach Jordi Fernandez comes back with the starters. Canada calls time out as Germany goes on a 7-0 run of their own. Germany back up 35-28 with 5:58 to play in the half.

12:59 p.m. — Great start out of the quarter break for Canada. Nickeil Alexander-Walker with some good minutes on both ends of the floor. NAW proving he can be the second unit's playmaker come World Cup time. Canada still down 28-26 with 8:34 to play in the second.

End of first quarter: Germany 26, Canada 20

12:54 p.m. —  End of the first frame. Canada's lineup of Kyle Alexander, Melvin Ejim, Lu Dort, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Trae Bell-Haynes handled the game's physicality better but the team in red still trails at the break. RJ Barrett leads all scorers with eight points. Balance scoring for Germany but Dennis Schroder is setting the tone with five points and dimes.

Canada gave up seven fast break points in the first and have none themselves at the break. They're also getting out-rebounded 14-9. Those are the differences after one.

12:48 p.m. — Out of the time out RJ Barrett knocks down a 3. He's off to a good start with eight points shooting 2-2 from 3-point range. 18-17 Germany in front.

12:46 p.m. — First time out of the game comes with 3:05 to play in the first period. Canada is down 18-14. Dennis Schroder is controlling the game right now, with five points and five assists. Canada is going to have to pick up the physicality as Germany just seems more apt to take the game to the Canadians at the moment.

12:40 p.m. — Back-and-forth attention to start, but Dillon Brooks and Kelly Olynyk both pick up two early fouls. That brings Lu Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker off the bench early. 10-9 Germany with 5:05 to play in the first quarter.

12:38 p.m. — The first bucket of the game is scored by Daniel Theis. Kelly Olynyk knocks down a 3 on the other end for Canada. 3-2 early on for Canada.

12:31 p.m. — Here we go! Canada wearing their road red uniforms. Germany in their home whites. Dillion Brooks has his game face on.
