Q&A: Jimmie Johnson talks NASCAR's future, midweek Cup races, more
Sunday night's race at Darlington arrives with four drivers vying for the final two playoffs spots before the NASCAR postseason arrives in two weeks. Ryan Newman (15th), Daniel Suarez (16th), Clint Bowyer (17th) and Jimmie Johnson (18th) are separated by 38 points.
Suarez improved his positioning a couple weeks ago in Bristol, where the Joe Gibbs Racing driver secured an eighth-place finish. Johnson finished 19th in that race, which is why he's stuck behind the other three contenders. Based on history, though, Johnson has to feel better about Darlington than Suarez does.
Johnson is a three-time Cup Series winner at Darlington, with his most recent victory coming in 2011, and he is the only driver of the four who has been to victory lane at the track. In two career starts at Darlington, Suarez has finished 38th and 29th.

Newman has a Cup Series-best 13 top-10 finishes — along with seven top-fives — in 20 career starts at Darlington. Bowyer has only one top-10 finish in 13 starts at the track.
"We know how important these next two races are," Bowyer recently said of the races at Darlington and Indianapolis. “Everyone in the sport knows and everyone will be watching. We know if we run like we are capable of running, we will be fine. Now we just have to go out and do it this weekend at Darlington and next weekend at Indianapolis."
