With one race left before the final cut of the Cup Series postseason, Denny Hamlin finds himself on the outside looking in.
FOLLOW LIVE: Updates, highlights from the Xfinity 500 playoff elimination race at Martinsville
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has put together one of the most sparkling careers in NASCAR history, winning 48 races on the circuit. He seems a certainty for the NASCAR Hall of Fame when all is said and done.
Yet, Hamlin still doesn't have a Cup Series championship to his name. He has come close — Hamlin has finished in the top five in points each of the past three seasons. But almost doesn't count.
Hamlin finds himself in fifth place entering the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, a track at which the Virginia native has had sustained success in the past — Hamlin has five career Cup wins at The Paperclip.
But it has been six years since he last nabbed the checkered flag at Martinsville.
The pressure is on Hamlin on Sunday afternoon. Will he get it done and move himself one step closer to cementing his status as an all-time great?
