Who won the Daytona 500? Full results, winner from NASCAR’s 2022 season-opening race image

For the fourth time since 2018, the Daytona 500 has ended in an overtime period.

And, for the first time since 2011, a rookie has made their way to the winner's circle at the Daytona International Speedway: Austin Cindric of Team Penske. The rookie found himself leading the field after two crashes (drawing the sixth and seventh cautions of the day, respectively) in the final six laps of the race.

Cindric, making just his eighth NASCAR Cup Series start, was able to hold off a savvy move from Bubba Wallace in the final stretch of the race, as the No. 23 car pushed Penske teammate Ryan Blaney from behind, forcing the latter to the outside. Cindric blocked his teammate and managed to keep Wallace from winning his second consecutive superspeedway race following last year's race at Talladega.

"I appreciate Ryan being a great teammate," Cindric said on the Fox telecast following the race. "Obviously he wants to win this one but I'm so pumped. ...

"I'm surrounded by great people, that's all there is to it. I know there's going to be highs and lows being a rookie in a field of drivers this strong. I'm just grateful for the opportunity. Excited for the climb the mountain ahead of us. ... But we're in the playoffs. That's one nice box to check."

Wallace, who ended up finishing second, bemoaned the fact the fact he couldn't win his second restrictor plate race:

"What could have been, right?" Wallace said. "Man, I need to talk about some happy stuff here. Man, just dejected. The thing that picks me up is the hard work that we put into our speedway stuff. ... I knew this was a big move for me last year to go out and be competitive. And we're showing that.

"We'll come home second. I'm going to be pissed off about this one for a while."

Chase Briscoe, Ryan Blaney, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Michael McDowell, David Ragan, Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott rounded out the top 10. Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson finished 32nd.

Daytona 500 live updates, highlights from 2022 race

All times Eastern

6:45 p.m.: Oh man, what a finish! The rookie, Austin Cindric, is your winner of the 2022 Daytona 500. Here's how it played out:

Wallace, in third, pushed second-place Blaney from behind, forcing him outside. Cindric, in the lead, was forced to block his fellow Team Penske drivef into the wall, allowing Wallace to make a move inside. Cindric was able to hold off the No. 23 car, however, winning the race by half a car over Wallace. Incredible driving by Cindric in the overtime period.

6:44 p.m.: Cindric leads heading into the white flag with Blaney right on his tail. Keselowski is in third.

6:41 p.m: Heading to overtime, which will be the fourth of the last six Daytona 500s (including the 2022 race). Only two laps remain.

6:39 p.m.: Keselowski and Buescher were also involved in the crash, with only the former able to drive off. The new top 10 following the crash: Cindric, Blaney, Wallace, Keselowski, Almirola, Kyle Busch, Briscoe, David Ragan, Michael McDowell and Truex, respectively.

6:36 p.m.: Stenhouse is the cause of the wreck. He was side-drafting Wallace, whose car took some damage (losing a fender) but was regardless able to avoid the worst of the crash. The contact caused Stenhouse to spin out, ending his day. Tough break, considering he led the 500 with eight laps remaining before consecutive cautions. JTG Daugherty Racing will go home empty-handed.

6:35 p.m.: Caution 7 Lap (196). Another crash. Let's see who's all involved. ...

6:33 p.m.: Stenhouse, Cindric, Keselowski, Blaney and Wallace make up the top five coming out of the caution, respectively. Buescher, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Ty Dillon and Chase Briscoe make up the remainder of the top 10. Six laps will remain when the flag goes green again.

6:28 p.m.: Red flag reverts back to caution.

6:23 p.m.: Red flag out, halting all movement on the track. Crews are out there removing debris.

6:19 p.m.: Caution 6 (Lap 195). A crash in the middle of the pack has stopped the action for the sixth time today. Looks like Harvick was sandwiched between Buescher in front and Larson in the back; Buescher was too slow and Larson bumped Harvick, causing several cars to spin out. The crash also included Elliott, Gilliland, Erik Jones and Noah Gragson.

6:;15 p.m.: Stenhouse takes over the lead with 16 laps remaining. Wallace gets caught up in the draft and falls to 11th. Expect these last rotations to get crazy.

6:10 p.m.: And now Stenhouse is making moves to challenge Wallace up front.

6:08 p.m.: Wallace and Busch have moved ahead of the pack with 24 laps remaining.

5:59 p.m.: Now Bubba Wallace takes over the top spot — with Kyle Busch hot on his trail — with 36 laps remaining.

5:41 p.m.: Truex's car is involved as well; potentially devastating news for the winner of the first two stages here at Daytona.

5:39 p.m.: Caution 4 (Lap 150): Another crash brings out the fifth caution flag of the day. Several cars are involved; looks like the cause was Villeneuve making contact with Reddick who was way inside. That caused the former to spin out. Kurt Busch and Logano were involved as well.

5:38 p.m.: Keselowski leads with 50 laps remaining.

5:14 p.m.: Another stage win for Truex, who just narrowly edges out Joey Logano. Caution 4 (Lap 130) is out as well. The full top 10 for the stage:

  1. Martin Truex Jr.
  2. Joey Logano
  3. Bubba Wallace
  4. Brad Keselowski
  5. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
  6. Austin Cindric
  7. Chris Buescher
  8. Kevin Harvick
  9. Kyle Larson
  10. Todd Gilliland

5:12 p.m.: Christopher Bell is back out there:

5:10 p.m.: Keselowski and Logano pass Larson with five laps left to go in Stage 2; Larson ends up falling back to ninth.

4:52 p.m.: Just over halfway done in the 2022 Daytona 500, and Blaney has the most laps led in the race.

4:45 p.m.: Hamlin, Burton, Byron and Chastain are all out of this race. Bell is still in the garage as his team works on suspension issues.

4:35 p.m.: Seventeen laps into Stage 2 and Ryan Blaney sits in the lead for the moment. He's followed by Austin Cindric, Chris Buescher, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski in the top five.

4:19 p.m.: Martin Truex Jr. wins Stage 1 under caution. The full top 10 following Stage 1:

  1. Martin Truex Jr.
  2. Keselowski
  3. Todd Gilliland
  4. Rickey Stenhouse Jr.
  5. Joey Logano
  6. Austin Dillon
  7. Kurt Busch
  8. Erik Jones
  9. Chase Elliott
  10. Kyle Larson

4:17 p.m.: Burton's car is getting transported off the track. His day is done.

4:13 p.m.: In all, eight cars were involved in the crash: Ross Chastain; Keselowski; Denny Hamlin; Kyle Busch; Christopher Bell; Burton; William Byron; and Bowman.

4:09 p.m.: Caution 3 (Lap 63). Uh-oh. Significant crash has taken out multiple cars, including Burton, whose car hit its roof before ending up on its wheels. William Byron also slid a good ways before hitting the wall.

4:07 p.m.: Harrison Burton takes over the lead with six laps remaining.

4:03 p.m.: Now Ryan Blaney is having trouble with his right-rear tire. The race is back to green with nine laps remaining in Stage 1.

4 p.m.: Also worth noting that Villeneuve gets a free pass on the second caution of the day, so he's no longer one back of the pack.

3:58 pm.: Caution 2 (Lap 54): Justin Haley has lost a wheel now. The rubber went for a nice stroll while the tire itself is split.

3:55 p.m.: Kyle Busch leads the pack with 15 laps to go in the first stage.

3:50 p.m.: Back to the green flag on Lap 46 (20 to go in the stage).

3:44 p.m.: Caution 1 (Lap 40): Chase Briscoe goes for a slide, and Kaz Grala has completely lost his tire which, according to the rules, will result in "a four-race suspension of the crew chief and two additional team members" (hat tip to Fox Sports NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass).

3:40 p.m.: Villeneuve spins out but no cautions are out as it happened at the beginning of pit row. Logano is the leader after the green-flag pit stop.

3:31 p.m.: Kyle Busch finally takes the lead from Keselowski on Lap 28 after hovering near the front all race. Keselowski falls to second.

3:26 p.m.: Twenty-four laps into the race, and Keselowski has led all but one.

3:17 p.m.: Keselowski is at the front of the field; on the opposite side, Daniel Hemric has been lapped after serving a pass-through penalty following the waving of the green flag.

3:08 p.m.: And they're off! Welcome to the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series, everyone.

2:59 p.m.: Quick reminder of the stages at the Daytona 500:

  • Stage 1: 65 laps (Laps 1-65)
  • Stage 2: 65 laps (Laps 66-130)
  • Final Stage: 70 laps (Laps 131-200)

2:53 p.m.: Trace Adkins' rendition of the national anthem is capped off with a nice flyover at Daytona Beach:

2:35 p.m.: Charles Woodson is ready to fulfill his duties as grand marshal:

2:15 p.m.: Chase Briscoe and Daniel Hemric are starting at the rear of the field due to multiple failed inspections. They will join Joey Logano (backup car) and Jacques Villeneuve (engine change).
