Who won the Daytona 500? Full results, winner from NASCAR’s 2024 season-opening race image

A tale of two skids: The chaotic 2024 Daytona 500 proved to be just that.

With two laps to go, any number of drivers could see their names up in lights. William Byron and Ross Chastain were the likeliest candidates to capture the victory, with their menacing carriages proving sturdier and faster than that of their adversaries.

For much of the day, they danced alone, plodding the course as cars tumbled back and forth like leaves on a windy day. As the race neared its crescendo, though, they waltzed into each others' paths.

In the end, Byron flew past his opposition to secure his first win at the famous old ground of the Daytona International Speedway. He ended the day with a skid befitting of a king.

Chastain wasn't quite so lucky. He barreled towards the infield, leaving remnants of his tires all across the slick grass.

This year's contest proved an enthralling watch — filled with spills, thrills and plenty of burnt rubber. In addition to Chastain's late crash, the Big One came with eight laps remaining, entangling 22 cars and ending the race for nine drivers.

Yet when the dust settled, a familiar paint scheme stood atop the podium. Byron — driving in the No. 24 car Jeff Gordon made famous — pranced into victory circle, shrouded in confetti, sweat and glory.

Daytona 500 live updates, results, highlights from 2024 race

(All times Eastern)

8:10 p.m.: An apt quote by Logano to end the proceedings here at Daytona International:

"It's speedway racing. It's a lot of fun until it sucks."

8:02 p.m.: Video replay indicates that it's Byron who wins! The No. 24 car is back in victory lane at Daytona!

8:01 p.m.: CAUTION! Final block by Byron sends Chastain spiraling. It's unclear whether the white flag was out. It's either Bowman or Byron who picked up the checkered flag.

8:00 p.m.: Byron out in front, followed by Cindric and LaJoie. Just two laps remaining.

7:59 p.m.: We're finally back to green. Byron and Chastain pushing hard as we hit three laps remaining.

7:41 p.m.: Eighteen cars involved in the collision. Half of those carriages were eventually taken back into pit road. But it remains to be seen how many will be able to continue.

7:39 p.m.: RED FLAG! You knew it was coming after this wreck. We find ourselves in a bit of a delay.

7:33 p.m.: Bowman lost control, digging into his teammate Byron. The No. 24 then veered into Keselowski, who — alongside Chastain and Logano — had been slaloming left and right to get beyond Chastain. The No. 6 tried to pull off the throttle and avoid getting Logano caught up in the chaos. But it was too late. Now, a trail of debris lies in their wake.

7:30 p.m.: CAUTION! The Big One! Keselowski unable to get beyond his marker as more than a dozen drivers take damage. Chastain survives the mayhem. And with eight laps to go, the tenor of this race is a whole lot different.

7:29 p.m.: Keselowski displaces Logano for a moment, but the No. 22 car returns to the front after a stream of movement. 10 laps to go!

7:28 p.m.: Wallace didn't get enough fuel to make it to the finish. A wreck feels on the horizon at present. These blocks are getting more and more physical.

7:27 p.m.: Stenhouse is to the lead with 15 remaining. It is tight as can be as the laps dwindle down. Expect to see some serious risks in the final portion of tonight's race.

7:23 p.m.: Everyone else fills into pit road. 18 laps to go and things are really about to get interesting as the Fords, Chevrolets and Toyotas all meld to create one gleaming armada.

7:22 p.m.: And here come the Fords! Logano and Ragan among those who take a breather on pit road.

7:21 p.m.: Busch, Hamlin and Haley the next cadre of drivers to pit.

7:19 p.m.: Pit stops starting. Ty Gibbs and Riley Herbst among the five drivers to strut into the pits. Now, here comes the Toyotas — save Hamlin.

7:15 p.m.: Tremendous showing by Ragan so far. Hasn't raced in the Cup Series in two seasons. Now, he's got a chance at winning the Daytona 500. The No. 60 car for Roush Fenway Keselowski currently sits in P2 with 26 to go, a tenth-of-a-second behind Logano.

7:11 p.m.: Logano has shot out the pack like a cannon! He's back to the front, surpassing the likes of Busch and Hamlin in the process!

7:07 p.m.: Busch hits the wall! The No. 8 car attempted to veer in front of Bell to secure P3. He caromed off the inside barrier ass he swerved in. It will be interesting to see if the slight contact causes him any issues going further.

7:05 p.m.: Hamlin still holding strong atop the pack. LaJoie impressing as well. So too is Busch, who is in extraordinary position to pick up his first Daytona win. 39 laps left at Daytona Beach.

6:59 p.m.: Hamlin makes his move, swerving inside then out to usurp LaJoie's position atop the pyramid. Now, it's between him and Busch for first. 47 laps to go in this one.

6:57 p.m.: Busch is back! He's rocketed back into a winning position by keeping his cool amid the tempest of metal goblins that surround him.

6:54 p.m.: LaJoie doing an impressive job keeping the momentum in the higher lane. He's competing for first alongside Hemric, Allmendinger, Ragan and one Denny Hamlin.

6:53 p.m.: The current top-three is Allmendinger, Ragan and Hemric. Who would've predicted that prior to the race?

6:50 p.m.: Three cars wide with 60 laps to go. Reddick, Allmendinger and Truex are the ones circulating around the top-three at present. Cindric and Wallace have fell off a tad.

6:46 p.m.: We're back to green one last time! Wallace and Cindric leading things off, although expect Blaney and Reddick to be working hard atop the field as well.

6:43 p.m.: It just hasn't happened for Busch at Daytona. He frolics through pit road with a loose wheel, forcing him back into his pit.

6:33 p.m.: Blaney outpaces his teammate Cindric on the final lap, capturing the stage victory!

6:27 p.m.: Another Daytona 500 winner has emerged atop the chaos: Team Penske's Austin Cindric. The No. 2 car currently is jostling for position alongside Busch and his teammate Blaney.

6:20 p.m.: A wave of drivers — led by Wallace — head to pit road. Such and Blaney should get a bit of reprieve up top.

6:16 p.m.: Busch returns to the front! He's outpaced Wallace and Preece atop the field with 20 laps to go in the stage. Blaney is making a late push to get himself into the action as well.

6:02 p.m.: Logano has been dominant in the second stage, looking every bit like the man who picked up the pole earlier in the week.

5:57 p.m.: Martin Truex Jr. — another iconic driver who has never captured gold at Daytona — is finding his footing after a few tactical adjustments. He's firmly in the top-ten now, sitting behind Wallace in the lower line.

5:49 p.m.: Berry and Briscoe's errors ravage the first lane, forcing each car into the middle and furthest lane.

5:48 p.m.: The third line begins to take shape. And it finds a rhythm, with Logano racing out in front. He's joined by Justin Haley, Chris Buescher and Busch, all of whom have found the momentum.

5:46 p.m.: Larson and Berry will lead off the festivities as Stage 2 gets underway!

5:35 p.m.: Four Hendricks cars are competing for the top spot among. Elliott gets by Busch after the No. 8 car attempts to make a block. Chastain making a late push to get Larson out in front. But it's Elliott who picks up the Stage 1 win in thrilling fashion!

5:32 p.m.: The No. 10, No. 38, No. 4 and No. 51 cars are slaloming into pit road. David Fagan takes the lead. He'll attempt to go on 50% throttle and maintain his place atop the totem pole for the final few laps of the stage. Preece making quite the charge behind him, followed by Busch, Byron and Elliott. Will take some doing for Ragan to pick up the stage victory over the likes of his rivals.

5:30 p.m.: Toyota's pit road strategy didn't prove as effective. Wallace stalled out as he sought out fuel, holding everyone else up. Busch and his Chevrolet counterparts look slated to get back around those in front of them, among whom include Noah Gragson, Todd Gilliland and Berry.

5:28 p.m.: Chevrolets are flying into pit road, including Elliott and Busch. Blaney's aggressive approach of trying to acquire fuel has paid off.

5:25 p.m.: Further down the line is Blaney and McDowell. They're attempting to pick up speed in P32 and P33. However, they just can't  get all that much speed.

Atop the totem pole stands Elliott, Kyle Busch and Bubba Wallace — three drivers who have never one NASCAR's signature race.

5:23 p.m.: Elliott takes the lead! The Hendrick Motorsports car finally emerges out of the mire to take P1.

5:19 p.m.: After the front three cars pitted — as well as a slew of other drivers — McDowell, Josh Berry and Chase Elliott are making a play for the crown. Just 20 laps remaining before Stage 1 comes to a close.

5:03 p.m.: Bell, Blaney and Hemric are firing on all cylinders at the front of the pack. 25 laps down, 40 laps to go in Stage 1. If things stay free, those three will have to saunter off the track for oil, though. So things should reshuffle soon enough.

4:52 p.m.: Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney and Daniel Hemric opted to stay out on the track rather than flowing into pit road. They'll make up three of the first four drivers in the pack as the race returns to its usual lime disposition.

4:48 p.m.: Pit road is open. That's elicited a steady stream of drivers to filter into and out off the yard as they attempt to top off their fuel tanks.

4:46 p.m.: Slick infield grass looked to have prompted Burton and Hocevar's cars to slide back onto the track. Mother Nature claims another victim.

4:40 p.m.: CAUTION! Harrison Burton wipes out on the infield grass, colliding hard with fellow youngster Carson Hocevar. Looked like Brad Keselowski bumped into John Hunter Nemechek, starting all the mayhem. Austin Dillon, Ryan Preece, Jimmie Johnson and Kaz Grala also caught up in the action.

4:38 p.m.: The first five laps have gone about as calmly as expected. Joey Logano and Michael McDowell still retain their front row position. Ross Chastain is attempting to spark a trend by starting up a third lane

4:34 p.m.: The green flag has been waved! We have lift off on perhaps the greatest event in American racing: the Daytona 500!

4:20 p.m.: The Rock is delivering the most famous words in racing:

'Drivers, start your engines!'

We're on the brink of greatness.

4:13 p.m.: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson strolling about the track in the customary pace car.

4:07 p.m.: National anthem being sang. We're precious moments away from liftoff here at Daytona Beach.

3:55 p.m.: Six cars to the rear to start the action: Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Kyle Busch, Noah Gragson, Daniel Hemric and Kaz Grala.

3:30 p.m.: A.J. Allmendinger the first driver to arrive in the weekly driver's meeting. The image of a lonely Allmendinger surrounded by a cascade of folding chairs has spawned a great few social media users to get off those all important tweets.

3:15 p.m.: Cars are on the grid. Engines will let off their steam in about an hour.

2:45 p.m.: The masses are starting to fill into one of NASCAR's great colosseums, Daytona International Speedway.

2:33 p.m.: Scary sight occurred on the track not too long ago as two jet driers collided with one another in Turn 1. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. NASCAR dispatched a speedy drying unit to mop up the fuel spillage that resulted from the wreck.

2:30 p.m.: Mother Nature shouldn't cause too much of a concern for today's race. The storm system that swept Daytona International in a fog of rain on Sunday has finally subsided.
