NASCAR handed Cup Series driver Cody Ware an indefinite suspension on Monday after he was arrested on a felony charge of assault by strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault on a female.
The alleged incident occurred on April 3 at a home in Mooresville, North Carolina, according to TMZ Sports. The 27-year old was taken to a jail in Iredell County, North Carolina, where his bail was set at $3,000, according to NASCAR. Bond records show that he was released from custody on Monday afternoon.
Ware didn't participate in this week's race at Bristol. Rick Ware Racing, owned by his father, released a statement this past Saturday saying the Cup Series driver was away “to focus on a personal matter.” He was replaced in the No. 51 Ford by Craftsman Truck Series veteran Matt Crafton. Crafton finished 34th, blighted by an engine failure.
On Monday, Rick Ware Racing released another statement, announcing it "understands" and "accepts" NASCAR's decision. The racing organization will announce its plans for the No. 51 car in the coming few days.
