Indy 500 purse, payout breakdown: How much prize money does the winner get in 2024? image

The Indy 500 is a yearly spectacle around the world, especially in Indiana.

The event is considered one of the world's top races and a third of the Motorsport Triple Crown along with 24 Hours of Le Mans and Monaco Grand Prix.

The 2024 Indy 500 is the 108th edition of the race and will feature 33 drivers on Sunday, May 26 — the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

With any major race or event, winning the competition is a prize in itself. The pride, joy, and name etched into the history books is sometimes all an athlete can ask for. Of course, there's also prize money.

The winner gets a majority stake of the purse, while others also get a share of the pot.

The Sporting News breaks down how much money is in the 2024 Indy 500 purse and how much goes to the winner.

How much prize money does the Indy 500 winner get in 2024?

  • Prize money: $3.66 million (est.)

The winner's prize money hasn't been announced yet, but it's expected to be around the $3.66 million range based on last year's total. The winnings increased three straight years, so it's possible that the prize money surpasses $4 million this year.

The prize money is dependent on a number of factors, including sponsorships, laps led, and pole winner. It's not as straightforward as other major events such as the PGA Championship where the winner gets a flat percentage of the purse.

What is the Indy 500 purse for 2024?

  • $17 million (est.)

The Indy 500 purse for 2024 has not been announced yet, but it's estimated to be around $17 million based on last year's purse. It's increased for the past three years, hitting $17 million in 2023, marking the biggest purse in Indy 500 history.
