The MotoGP racing season returned in March 2024, and 11 meetings into this year's 20-race calendar, it appears to be a straight shoot-out at the top of the World Riders' Championship standings between two-time defending champion Francesco Bagnaia and his closest challenger, Ducati rival Jorge Martín.
A shake-up in the racing calendar and locations saw the season opener — won at the death by Bagnaia — return to Qatar's Lusail International Circuit, while the Grand Prix of Aragon also returned to the schedule last weekend. Bagnaia has picked up victories in Jerez, Catalonia, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria, yet still trails Martin in the standings by 23 points!
Martin, meanwhile, may have only collected victories at the Portuguese and French Grands Prix in the earlier weeks of the season, but a host of second and third-placed finishes – including three in a row in Great Britain, Austria and Aragon – have the Spaniard leading Bagnaia beyond the halfway stage and in pole position to win his maiden MotoGP World Championship title.
Bagnaia and Martin's compatriots Enea Bastianini, Maverick Viñales and Marc Marquez have also won respective 2024 races in Great Britain, the US and Aragon respectively, but with the San Marino Grand Prix next up as the campaign nears its final straight, the top two will be keen to pull even further away from the chasing pack.
With 20 races and 27 drivers giving their all to wrestle the World Riders' Championship away from Bagnaia's Ducati Desmosidici, anticipation is high for the rest of the 2024 MotoGP season. To keep tabs on all the action throughout the year, The Sporting News has you covered.
