At one point, Amanda Nunes considered retirement after she lost the UFC bantamweight title to Julianna Pena at UFC 269 in 2021. Now, bantamweight champion once again, “The Lioness” is ready to show she can continue to dominate at 35 years old.
Nunes, also the UFC featherweight champion, defends the 135-pound title against Irene Aldana at UFC 289 on June 10. The fight, which takes place at Canada's Rogers Center, airs on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.
Prior to the Pena fight, the last loss for Nunes was in 2014 against Cat Zingano. She then went on a 12-fight win streak, beating the likes of Valentina Shevchenko, Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, and Ronda Rousey. Now a mother, Nunes’ competitive drive is as strong as ever.
That could be very dangerous for her Mexican-born opponent.
Aldana, also 35, is on a two-fight win streak and has proven to be a top talent in the division. If she can beat Nunes, she will join Brandon Moreno, Yair Rodriguez, and Alexa Grasso as Mexican fighters who became champions this year.
