Holloway vs. Edgar odds

As of July 23, online sportsbook SBR has Holloway as a sizable favorite. Holloway comes in at -410, meaning you'd need to wager $410 to win $100, and Edgar is a +340 underdog, meaning if you bet $100, you'd net $340.

The case can be made — and it's a valid one — that Holloway is the greatest featherweight in UFC history. He's on a 13-fight winning streak competing at 145 pounds with three consecutive title defenses. He has a UFC featherweight record of 15 overall victories — 10 by way of stoppage. We have never seen Holloway's groundwork because of his fantastic takedown defense. His striking is top-notch, as evidenced by the way he made mincemeat of Brian Ortega's face at UFC 231, connecting on a UFC record 290 significant strikes. Add in the fact that Holloway also blasted the guy who was deemed the best featherweight, Jose Aldo, in back-to-back fights at UFC 212 and UFC 218.

Regardless of what Holloway brings to the table, don't downplay what Edgar (22-6-1) has done in his career. He's a former UFC lightweight champion and made three defenses of the title before losing to Benson Henderson at UFC 144 in February. After losing a rematch to Henderson at UFC 150 in August 2012, Edgar proceeded to drop down to featherweight and immediately got a crack at Aldo but suffered a narrow decision loss at UFC 156 in February 2013. Edgar received another chance to win the championship. It wasn't meant to be, as he lost to Aldo again in an interim title fight at UFC 200 in July 2016. The New Jersey native is 8-3 so far in his tenure at 145 pounds.

Looking at the odds, one would assume Edgar doesn't have a chance. The paths heading into UFC 240 gives Edgar hope that he could finally capture the brass ring at featherweight.

You have to look at the fact that three months ago, Holloway was in one of the best fights of 2019 when he moved up to lightweight and went toe-to-toe in a 25-minute war with Dustin Poirier, losing by unanimous decision for the interim title at UFC 236. Having the 27-year-old come back in short order against the caliber of Edgar is a tall order for Holloway. There's no way Holloway can be 100 percent after the beating Poirier inflicted on him. Don't forget Holloway's going to have to drop an extra 10 pounds, and getting to 145 pounds will be hard for a guy who has struggled to make weight in the last couple of fights.

For Edgar, this is his last shot at glory. He's catching Holloway at the right time and has absolutely nothing to lose, so he's going to let it all hang out. He won't stand right in front of the champion and let Holloway tee off on him as he did to Ortega. His footwork is second-to-none, has above-average power, and possesses better wrestling than he gets credit for.

Betting on Edgar is a solid play here and one you should put some money on. Many pundits and fans feel he doesn't deserve the title shot because he already received two opportunities at gold, and someone else should get a chance. If that alone doesn't give Edgar motivation, I don't know what will.

SN Pick: Max Holloway

Best Odds: Frankie Edgar; Bet Online (+340)
