MLS Review: Frei saves Seattle on night of fireworks in MLS image

The holiday slate in MLS produced some stunning moments for the Fourth of July.

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei produced the night's biggest play, coming up with a massive diving stop to preserve a narrow 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids, but he was far from alone.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was back among the early goals with a lovely left-footed volley, and teammate Chris Pontius produced a stunning second for the Galaxy.

Darwin Quintero proved to be more than defending champion Toronto FC could handle and, following on from a Tuesday night contest that saw the Houston Dynamo claw two goals back in stoppage time to earn a draw, their Texas rivals FC Dallas completed a late turnaround to topple Atlanta United.

The festivities got rolling with Minnesota United's 4-3 win over Toronto, where Quintero's hat trick did most of the work in a well-earned victory for the home side.

MLS leading scorer Josef Martínez had league-leading Atlanta on the verge of road win with his two-goal showing, but a quickfire brace from Tesho Akindele in the final five minutes of regular time was enough to see the home side walk away with a 3-2 win in a thriller.

For Seattle, Will Bruin's double had the Sounders in front of the Colorado Rapids, but it was an outstanding save from Stefan Frei that made sure of the result.

With the Sounders clinging to a 2-1 lead, Shkelzen Gashi had what looked like a sure equalizer on his foot, but the diving Frei got a big hand to it to preserve the win.

Sporting Kansas City got off to a bright start against Real Salt Lake, with Daniel Salloi putting the visiting side in front 20 minutes in, but RSL responded well, scoring three times before the break.

Ike Opara pulled one back for SKC just after the hour mark, but Luis Silva scored from the spot deep into stoppage time to put the 4-2 win on ice for RSL.

Ibrahimovic got the nightcap off to a fine start as well, just five minutes in to put the Galaxy on top.

A stunner from Pontius put LA two goals up, but D.C. pulled one back just a minute later.

And on a night of late drama, Darren Mattocks got United, still without new signing Wayne Rooney, back on level terms at 2-2 in the 85th minute and the match would end in a fitting draw.
