MLS Playoffs: How Portland and Seattle can clinch postseason spots midweek image

The MLS playoffs are fast approaching, with seven teams having already booked spots in the postseason heading into the midweek slate of action. 

Two teams will have a chance to punch their tickets this on Wednesday night, while defending champion Toronto FC will be looking to play spoiler against D.C. United.

Atlanta United - Clinched a top-two finish in the East and a first-round bye

New York Red Bulls - Clinched a top-two finish in the East and a first-round bye

New York City FC - Clinched 2018 MLS Cup playoff place

Philadelphia Union - Clinched 2018 MLS Cup playoff place

SILL IN THE HUNT

Columbus Crew -  Fifth in the East on 48 points through 32 matches

D.C. United - Sixth in the East on 44 points through 31 matches. At home vs Toronto FC on Wednesday

Montreal Impact - Seventh in the East on   43 points through  32 matches

ALREADY IN

FC Dallas - The Hoops were the first team in the West to clinch a playoff spot. 

LAFC  - The expansion side is in and still in position to finish top in the West. 

Sporting Kansas City  - In action Wednesday against the Vancouver Whitecaps as they fight for top spot in the West. 

COULD GET IN MIDWEEK

Portland Timbers - Despite not being in action the Timbers could clinch midweek. They will need a loss or a draw from the Vancouver Whitecaps against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday and a Real Salt Lake loss or draw against the New England Revolution on Thursday. 

Seattle Sounders - The Sounders need a win or a draw against Orlando City on Wednesday to clinch. Barring that, the Sounders will be in the same boat as the Timbers, needing a loss or a draw from the Vancouver Whitecaps against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday and a Real Salt Lake loss or draw against the New England Revolution on Thursday. 

STILL IN THE HUNT

Real Salt Lake - Sixth in the West on 46 points through 32 matches. In action Thursday against the New England Revolution. 

LA Galaxy - Seventh in the West on 45 points through 32 matches. Not in action midweek. 

Vancouver Whitecaps - Eighth in the West on 43 points through 31 matches. In action against Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.
