Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who exited Saturday's loss to the Mariners with "left knee discomfort," is considered day-to-day, according to Sportsnet.
An MRI revealed minor inflammation, but "nothing major," according to the report.
Guerrero suffered the injury in the second inning when he fielded a grounder and threw awkwardly across his body to first base.
Manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters afterward that Guerrero's early exit was a precautionary measure.
“He felt a little tweak in his knee so we took him out just in case. So he's going to get an MRI to make sure he's fine. I'll know more about it tomorrow,” Montoyo said.
Widely regarded as the top rookie prospect entering this season, the 20-year-old Guerrero is slashing .274/.345/.464 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs. He's currently a longshot for AL Rookie of the Year honors, behind Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez and Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe, among others, but he's been hot lately and might be making up ground in the race.
“I think (Guerrero’s) there,” Montoyo said Saturday of Guerrero's ROY chances. “He just needs to get hot again like he did (these) past two weeks, and I think he’ll be there."
