The I-5 rivalry is back, and the stakes are higher than ever.
The Padres swept the Braves at Petco Park earlier this week, overcoming a depleted Atlanta roster without ace Chris Sale and fighting their way into the National League Division Series against their NL West rival Dodgers for the second time in three years.
The problem for the Padres? They would have to face one of the most stacked Dodgers rosters ever, one that features arguably the greatest baseball player of all time.
The Dodgers took Game 1 7-5, and their Japanese legend did not disappoint in his first playoff appearance. He was 2 for 5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. He smashed a three-run homer into right field his second at-bat off Padres ace Dylan Cease. The hit tied the score at three to end the second inning, with the Dodgers catching up after an RBI by Jurickson Profar and two-run home run by Manny Machado in the first.

San Diego would take the lead again in the top of the third thanks to two runs batted in by Xander Bogaerts on a double, sending home Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. That would end Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto's night, marking the first time the pitcher has given up five runs in a game since the teams' opening series in Korea.
Los Angeles now leads the series 1-0 with one more to go at home before heading down south to San Diego. Here's everything to know about Dodgers vs. Padres, including Ohtani updates, results, and highlights from the 2024 NLDS Game 1.

Final: Dodgers 7, Padres 5
12:15 a.m. — DODGERS WIN! Brandon Lockridge enters the game to pinch run for Profar, and Machado goes down 1-2 to Treinen. Treinen's last pitch, a sweeper, gets Machado swinging for the final out of the game, and Los Angeles comes away with Game 1.
12:13 a.m. — Profar swings and misses to start his at-bat, and Tatis Jr. takes second with no throw-down. Treinen then deals two balls to make it 3-1 before Profar fouls one off to make it a full count. Treinen walks Profar, bringing Machado to the plate as the leading run.
12:12 a.m. — Tatis Jr. steps up and goes down 0-2 before taking two balls. Then, he fouls one off before keeping the Padres' hopes alive with a single to Taylor out left, bringing the tying run to the plate. Profar is up next as the Dodgers take what will likely be their last mound visit.
12:08 a.m. — Back at the top of the order, Arraez steps up and takes two straight pitches before taking a strike. He lines out to Lux who makes an impressive catch, giving Tatis Jr. the last chance for San Diego to catch up.
12:05 a.m. — Trienen stays on the mound for Los Angeles, and Diaz steps up to the plate for the first time tonight. The catcher goes down 1-2 before Trienen strikes him out swinging. The Dodgers are two outs away from capturing the first game of the series.
End of the eighth inning: Dodgers 7, Padres 5
12 a.m. — Scott intentionally walks Betts, the second time the Padres have done so today, then Freeman steps up to the plate. He gets to 2-2 before striking out swinging, and San Diego gets out unscathed for the third inning straight but has only three outs to go before Game 1 goes to the Dodgers.
11:57 p.m. — Ohtani fouls two more off after taking a timeout, the second going into the helmet of Diaz. Then, he takes a pitch as Edman steals second as the catcher's throw-down is not on time. Ohtani strikes out on the next pitch for the second out of the half-inning.
11:55 p.m. — Up next for Los Angeles to face Scott is Rojas, who takes one ball before bunting into a pop out to the pitcher. Ohtani is up next, and he takes a pitch before fouling one off and missing a pitch to go down 1-2.
11:50 p.m. — Edman gets Hoeing to 2-2 before he rockets a single to center field after it hits the pitcher on the mound. The Padres use another mound visit and sub in Tanner Scott for Hoeing as the team's fifth reliever of the game in the bottom of the eighth.
11:48 p.m. — Solano goes down 0-2 like Bogaerts did then fouls two off. Finally, Trienen strikes him out swinging, getting out of a bases-loaded jam caused by three walks. Edman is up next for Los Angeles in the middle of the eighth.

10:40 p.m. — Merrill steps up to greet Vesia and goes down in a 1-2 hole after swinging at two pitches. He fouls one more off before striking out swinging to end the top of the fifth, San Diego still down a run.

Padres pitcher Cease has pitched against the Dodgers twice this season, giving up a total of four runs on eight hits and earning a win in one. Yamamoto has faced the Padres twice as well, giving up eight runs on eight hits, including two homers and one loss.

8:20 p.m. — Rather than going with usual first game pitcher Flaherty, the Dodgers are starting the series off with Yamamoto. Along with Ohtani, he is the second Japanese player to make his playoff debut for Los Angeles tonight.
8:10 p.m. — Notably, the Padres won the regular season series against their divisional rivals 8-5 through five separate series. Because of this, many are predicting San Diego to upset the Dodgers in the NLDS for the second time in three years. Even MLB great Derek Jeter is looking forward to the NL West clash.

The Yankees and Royals are neck and neck right now in New York, with the score at 3-2 Kansas City in the top of the fifth.
7:35 p.m. — When asked if he was nervous ahead of his first playoff game, Ohtani gave a simple "nope" and did not elaborate, eliciting laughter from himself and some of the reporters in the room.

7:25 p.m. — We are just over an hour away from first pitch in Los Angeles, and both teams have arrived at Dodger Stadium. Lineups were announced earlier this afternoon, as well. The Dodgers will start righty Yamamoto on the mound (7-2, 3.00 ERA) and the Padres will rely on ace Cease (14-11, 3.47 ERA), who threw the second no-hitter in team history earlier this season.
Freeman made the cut for Los Angeles after rolling his ankle in the team's season-ending series. Manager Roberts is going with the same lineup he used in Freeman's last game against San Diego, with the exception of Rojas entering at SS and Edman moving to CF, replacing Pages. San Diego's only change is swapping Solano and Cronenworth in the batting order.
