David Price injury update: Red Sox place starter (wrist) on 10-day IL image

David Price is heading to the injured list.

The Red Sox have placed the pitcher on the 10-day IL, with the move retroactive to Aug. 5, the team announced Thursday. The move comes after an MRI revealed he has a TFCC cyst in his left wrist, which was treated with a cortisone shot.

Righty Hector Velazquez has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Price's spot on the roster.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise, since there was no indication Price was dealing with any discomfort. If treatment goes well, he'll be eligible to return next Friday.

However, it could explain why Price has struggled since the All-Star break. In his last two starts, he's allowed 11 runs on 18 hits — including four home runs — in seven innings.

This marks the second time Price has been placed in the IL this season. He missed two weeks in May with tendinitis in his elbow.
