Snakes alive.
Nothing in baseball is guaranteed, but few would've given the Diamondbacks a chance after they dropped the first two games of the NLCS in Philadelphia. Even fewer might have given Arizona a chance when the Phillies took a 3-2 series lead into vaunted Citizens Bank Park after a Game 5 win.
None of that mattered in the Diamondbacks' clubhouse. A young, upstart team that hadn't even reached the postseason since 2017 kept believing, and that belief has taken them to the World Series for the first time since 2001.

Small ball won the night for Arizona in Game 7, as the Diamondbacks put four runs on the board without hitting a ball over the fence. The Snakes fell behind 2-1 in the fourth inning but quickly recovered, tying the game on a single by Corbin Carroll and taking the lead on a single by Gabriel Moreno.
They would add an insurance run in the seventh inning, but it didn't make a difference in the end. The Phillies never scored again, going down one-by-one against a red-hot Diamondbacks bullpen.
Philadelphia's best chance came in the seventh inning, when Andrew Saalfrank issued back-to-back walks to Cristian Pache and Kyle Schwarber with one out. Kevin Ginkel stole the momentum right back, coming in and getting both Trea Turner and Bryce Harper to fly out. Ginkel struck out the side in the eighth, and Paul Sewald stayed perfect in the postseason with a clean ninth to win the pennant for Arizona.

The Rangers and Diamondbacks both entered the final weekend of the regular season without a postseason berth in hand, but less than one month later, they are the only two teams still standing.
With manager Torey Lovullo at the helm, star rookie Corbin Carroll leading the way, and ace Zac Gallen at the top of the rotation, the Diamondbacks are four wins away from their second championship in franchise history. Only the Rangers stand in their way, with Game 1 set for Friday night in Arlington, Tex.

Final: Diamondbacks 4, Rangers 2
11:21 p.m. — Snakes Alive! The Arizona Diamondbacks, who won 84 games this season and hadn't been to the postseason since 2017, are heading to the World Series for the first time since 2001! Arizona pulls off the unthinkable after going down 2-0 in the series and wins back-to-back games in Philadelphia.

11:20 p.m. — Jake Cave is the pinch-hitter for the Phillies with Schwarber on deck.
11:19 p.m. — Marsh flies out to deep left field. The Diamondbacks are one out away from the World Series.
11:16 p.m. — Castellanos lofts a fly ball to right for the first out. Arizona is two outs away.
11:15 p.m. — Here. We. Go. Sewald will face Castellanos to start one of the biggest innings in Diamondbacks history.
11:13 p.m. — Strahm strikes out Carroll, and you know what that means. It's time for Paul Sewald to pitch.
11:10 p.m. — Strahm gets Marte to strike out, and he'll try to quiet Corbin Carroll's bat with two outs.
11:06 p.m. — Perdomo welcomes Strahm to the game with a line-drive single.
11:04 p.m. — Marsh is able to track down a fly ball from Emmanuel Rivera, and that'll do it for Wheeler. He did his job, though the question might be why he didn't come in earlier. Matt Strahm is entering the game.
11:00 p.m. — Ginkel strikes out the side. Shades of Tyler Matzek, anyone? He's been nails in the postseason. The Diamondbacks are three outs away from the World Series.

10:57 p.m. — Bryson Stott strikes out. The Diamondbacks are four outs away.
10:55 p.m. — Ginkel strikes out Bohm, who snaps his bat in anger. The Diamondbacks are five outs away.
10:51 p.m. — Wheeler gets Pavin Smith to fly out, so the deficit stays at two for the Phillies. The pressure is high.
10:48 p.m. — Trea Turner with a huge over-the-shoulder catch to get the second out of the inning. The Diamondbacks are hitting Wheeler pretty hard, but the defense is doing its job.

10:45 p.m. — Alek Thomas laces one to left field, but Castellanos reads it well and makes the catch. That could prove to be a major turning point if the Phillies come back.
10:41 p.m. — True to his name, Christian Walker works a leadoff walk. The Diamondbacks are trying to bury the Phillies this inning.
10:39 p.m. — Harper flies out, and Ginkel could not have done a better job. Barring a surprise, we'll see him back out there in the 8th. The Diamondbacks are six outs away.

10:36 p.m. — Ginkel gets Turner to fly out to centerfield. Two away. Here comes Bryce Harper.
10:32 p.m. — Saalfrank bounces a pitch to Schwarber and issues a second consecutive walk. Two runners on, one out. This is a massive moment for Trea Turner, who will face Kevin Ginkel after a pitching change.
10:29 p.m. — Saalfrank walks pinch-hitter Cristian Pache, who does exactly what he was asked to do. Here comes the top of the lineup.
10:26 p.m. — Andrew Saalfrank strikes out Marsh, so the Diamondbacks are eight outs away.
10:21 p.m. — Wheeler strikes out Moreno and avoids disaster. It's up to the Phillies' offense to hit its way back into this game.
Diamondbacks 4, Phillies 2
10:14 p.m. SACRIFICE FLY — Carroll records the second out of the inning, but it's a productive one. His sacrifice fly scores Perdomo and gives the Diamondbacks a massive insurance run. Zack Wheeler is coming in from the bullpen with the Phillies trailing by two.

10:12 p.m. — Ketel Marte just set a new record for longest hitting streak to start a postseason career at 16 consecutive games. Better yet, he doubles over Castellanos' head and sets up the Diamondbacks with runners on second and third with one out. This is a colossal at-bat for Corbin Carroll, who already has three hits tonight.

10:09 p.m. — Perdomo lines a one-out single to greet Alvarado.
10:07 p.m. — Hoffman gets Emmanuel Rivera to ground out, and that's it for him. It'll be Jose Alvarado, not Wheeler, on to pitch for the Phillies.
10:05 p.m. — Hoffman remains in for the Phillies, but Zack Wheeler is warming up.
10:02 p.m. — A quick and painless 1-2-3 inning for Ryan Thompson. The Diamondbacks are nine outs away from the World Series.
10:00 p.m. — Marte handles a sharp grounder from Stott and retires him for the first out of the inning.
9:56 p.m. — Hoffman does his job, strikes out Longoria, and holds the Diamondbacks' lead to one.
9:54 p.m. — Gurriel grounds a two-out single up the middle.
9:52 p.m. — Hoffman gets two quick outs, including a sharp flyout from Walker. The Phillies could certainly use a shutdown inning and are one out away from getting one.
9:47 p.m. — Lovullo continues to make the right moves as Thompson quickly ends the inning. The Diamondbacks work around the leadoff double and are 12 outs from the World Series.
9:44 p.m. — The mixing and matching has begun. Torey Lovullo is bringing in Ryan Thompson to try and get the final out of the inning.
9:43 p.m. — Harper JUST misses one. All the way to the warning track. Two outs.
9:42 p.m. — Turner grounds out, and the Diamondbacks keep Schwarber at second. One away with Harper at the plate.
9:41 p.m. — Joe Mantiply is in, and Kyle Schwarber greets him with a leadoff double. Just like that, the Phillies have a chance to tie the game.
9:37 p.m. RBI SINGLE — Moreno comes through with an RBI single to score Carroll, and the Diamondbacks have retaken the lead. Moreno is hung up and called out to end the inning, but no one in Arizona cares. All of the little things mattered in that inning to help push the Diamondbacks back in front.

9:36 p.m. — Carroll steals his second base of the game, this one much less stressful than the first one.
Diamondbacks 2, Phillies 2
9:33 p.m. RBI SINGLE — Corbin Carroll ties the game with a single up the middle! The sacrifice bunt proves vital, and Thomson's decision to let Suarez face Carroll a third time might be one he regrets. Hoffman is coming in to pitch for the Phillies.

9:30 p.m. — Suarez gets Marte to strike out. Marte is 0-3 and hasn't been able to extend his postseason hitting streak. Corbin Carroll is up after notching two hits off of Suarez earlier tonight.
9:28 p.m. — Geraldo Perdomo bunts Rivera over to second. More small ball! Meanwhile, Jeff Hoffman is up again for the Phillies in the bullpen.
9:26 p.m. — Emmanuel Rivera opens the fifth with a single as Suarez stays in the game.
9:24 p.m. — Disaster averted as Pfaadt strikes out Rojas. Pfaadt's stuff has been pretty nasty tonight, but the Phillies' two runs have the Diamondbacks trailing for the first time. 2-1, Phillies, through four.

9:22 p.m. — Pfaadt walks Marsh on four pitches, and it started to seem intentional after the first two pitches. Here comes Johan Rojas with the bases loaded and two outs. Pfaadt stays in.
9:20 p.m. — Pfaadt strikes out Castellanos, and Castellanos is now 0 for his last 21. Two away. Brandon Marsh could be Pfaadt's final batter.
9:18 p.m. — Realmuto singles, but Stott didn't get a good enough jump to score. Still, the Phillies have an opportunity to blow the game open with Castellanos at the plate.
Phillies 2, Diamondbacks 1
9:16 p.m. RBI DOUBLE — The Phillies have the lead! Bryson Stott hits one into the gap, and it hangs up long enough for Bohm to score from first. It's 2-1, Philadelphia.

9:13 p.m. — Bohm works a one-out walk.
9:11 p.m. — Harper swings at the first pitch and hits it almost to the exact spot Marsh did in the 3rd, but this time Pham comes up with it. One away.
9:07 p.m. — A quick inning for Suarez, who strikes out Longoria to end it. Suarez didn't look so sharp in the first three innings, even when he was working around hits, but he was terrific in the 4th. It'll be interesting to see how long Rob Thomson sticks with him.

9:04 p.m. — Suarez is back out for the 4th and strikes out Pham to start the inning.
9:00 p.m. — Pfaadt impressively works around the single by Marsh as Trea Turner grounds out. We're heading to the fourth all tied at one.
8:59 p.m. — Pfaadt gets Schwarber looking, and the fans don't like it. They might have a case.
8:58 p.m. — Johan Rojas successfully bunts Marsh over to second.
8:57 p.m. — Marsh singles on the first pitch of the inning as Pham, battling a toe injury, can't get there.
8:54 p.m. — Suarez quickly gets Walker to pop out, so he works around a single for the second consecutive inning.
8:53 p.m. — Gabriel Moreno grinds out a long at-bat but grounds out. Carroll remains at second with Christian Walker coming to the plate.
8:50 p.m. — Wow, Carroll takes off just as Suarez goes to pick him off, but Bryce Harper's throw from first goes high. It's a heart-stopping stolen base for the rookie.
8:49 p.m. — Carroll is 2-2 after his second single of the night. The rookie is seeing the ball well from Suarez.
8:48 p.m. — Marte strikes out looking after a long at-bat. His hitting streak is on the line after two hitless plate appearances.
8:42 p.m. — Castellanos strikes out to end the inning, so both pitchers have bounced back pretty well after giving up a run. We're all even through two.
8:40 p.m. — Pfaadt gets two quick outs, including a strikeout of Realmuto.
Diamondbacks 1, Phillies 1
8:38 p.m. HOME RUN — Alec Bohm blasts a game-tying home run off of Pfaadt! That was a no-doubter. It's 1-1.

8:35 p.m. — Suarez retires Perdomo and works around the leadoff single. Nice bounce-back inning for the Phillies starter.
8:32 p.m. — Emmanuel Rivera pops out to first base for the second out of the inning.
8:31 p.m. — Gurriel steals second. It didn't look like he got the best jump, but J.T. Realmuto's throw from his knees doesn't get there in time.
8:30 p.m. — Evan Longoria hits one hard to right field, but it's comfortably caught by Brandon Marsh. One away.
8:28 p.m. — Gurriel lines a first pitch single off Suarez to start the 2nd inning.
8:25 p.m. — Pfaadt strikes out Harper to end the inning. That was an outstanding start to the night for Pfaadt, who appears to be picking up where he left off in Game 3.
8:23 p.m. — Turner hits a broken-bat ground ball and is retired for the second out of the inning.
8:21 p.m. — Pfaadt battles back from a 3-1 count to strike out Kyle Schwarber.
8:15 p.m. — Suarez strikes out Pham to end the inning. Now it's on the Phillies' offense to deliver a quick answer.
Diamondbacks 1, Phillies 0
8:14 p.m. RBI FIELDER'S CHOICE — Christian Walker hits a soft ground ball, and the Phillies can't complete the double play. They get the out, but the Diamondbacks are on the board first.

8:11 p.m. — Corbin Carroll notches the Diamondbacks' first hit of the night with a bouncer that is unplayable for Bryson Stott.
8:10 p.m. — Suarez strikes out Marte swinging to start the night.
8:08 p.m. — Suarez is ready. Marte is ready. The first pitch is a called strike.
7:59 p.m. — We're minutes away from Ranger Suarez's first pitch in the first Game 7 in Phillies history.
7:38 p.m. — It's currently 61 degrees and clear in Philadelphia. A perfect night for postseason baseball.
7:18 p.m. — Ketel Marte has a chance to extend his postseason hitting streak to 16, which would be the longest to ever start a postseason career.
7:00 p.m. — As solid as Pfaadt has been, it's important to remember how dominant Ranger Suarez has been in October. He's allowed a single run through 14 innings in this postseason and has given the Phillies much-needed stability behind their two aces.

6:45 p.m. — Don't be surprised if Brandon Pfaadt doesn't last deep into the game even if he's dealing. The Diamondbacks have plenty of arms at their disposal, and their bullpen has been terrific this October.
6:20 p.m. — Chris Russo has vowed to retire if the Diamondbacks win Game 7 tonight, which Torey Lovullo says he's looking forward to." Just a little more fuel for Arizona.

3:45 p.m. — Every Game 7 is an all-hands-on-deck situation, and the Diamondbacks plan to have as many arms as possible ready behind rookie starter Brandon Pfaadt. That includes ace Zac Gallen, who will be available out of the bullpen, according to Torey Lovullo. Gallen started Game 1 and Game 5 (taking the loss in both); he threw 93 pitches Saturday.
1:55 p.m. — Torey Lovullo doing a bit of reshuffling with Arizona's Game 7 lineup, reverting to the same group he ran out to start Game 4, a 6-5 Diamondbacks win:
