MLB wrap: Mets top Padres behind big game from Robinson Cano image

Robinson Cano surprisingly led the Mets to a 5-2 win over the Padres at Citi Field on Tuesday.

The second baseman went 4 for 4 and hit three home runs in the victory. He also drove in all five of his team's runs.

The Mets also received a solid pitching performance from Jason Vargas, who totaled eight strikeouts in six innings of work. 

The Padres only managed five hits on the night and have struggled as of late. They've lost four of their last five and have dropped to 47-53 on the season. New York, on the other hand, now holds a 46-54 record.

Studs of the Night

Didi Gregorius had a game to remember Tuesday. He went 5 for 5 with two runs scored and seven RBIs in the Yankees’ thrilling 14-12 10-inning win over the Twins. He joined exclusive company.

Caleb Smith notched nine strikeouts in seven inning in a 5-1 victory for the Marlins against the White Sox.

Trevor Bauer tallied nine strikeouts as the Indians fell to the Blue Jays, 2-1, in 10 innings.

Trea Turner went 4 for 5 with two RBIs as the Nationals dominated the Rockies, 11-1.

Duds of the Night

Colin Moran went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in Pittsburgh's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Nick Markakis was hitless in five at-bats in the Braves' 5-4 loss to the Royals.

Highlights

The Astros' Yuli Gurriel managed to complete an inside-the-park home run against the Athletics.

Aaron Hicks secured the Yankees' win over the Twins with this diving catch in the bottom of the 10th. 

What's Next?

Royals (38-64) at Braves (60-42) 7:20 p.m. ET — Kansas City topped Atlanta on Tuesday, but the Braves still lead the National League East by a wide margin. The Royals have been on a hot streak and will look to remain competitive against one of MLB's top teams at SunTrust Park.
