MLB wrap: Dominic Smith, Pete Alonso shine in Mets' win over Giants image

The Mets lost to the Giants in dramatic fashion on Friday but came back to claim a huge win on Saturday at Oracle Park.

New York's Dominic Smith misjudged a popup hit to left field in the 10th inning last game, and his error allowed San Francisco to score its only run of the game and claim a 1-0 victory. Smith also went 0 for 4 at the plate in that contest, but bounced back in a big way this time around.

Smith went 3 for 5 on Saturday and tallied four RBIs. It was a complete 180 from his previous performance.

And then there's Pete Alonso, who has been in a hitting slump since winning the Home Run Derby. The first baseman was benched for rest in the contest but blasted a three-run homer in his lone at-bat as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway was pleased with Alonso's surprising showing in limited action.

"That's what you want," Callaway said following the win. "One at-bat, three RBIs and a homer and go rest some more. That was really good."

Pablo Sandoval was a bright spot for the Giants and went 4 for 4 at the plate.

New York is now 45-53 and sits in fourth in the National League East. San Francisco is 49-50 and third in the National League West.

Studs of the Night

Lucas Giolito struck out nine batters as the White Sox took down the Rays 2-1.

Jose Urquidy K'd nine batters in seven innings to help the Astros top the Rangers 6-1.

Pittsburgh's Starling Marte went 3 for 5 at the plate and tallied one RBI in the Pirates' 5-1 victory over the Phillies.

Duds of the Night

The Rockies' Antonio Senzatela gave up seven hits and six earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work in an 11-5 loss to the Yankees.

Oscar Mercado was hitless in four at-bats as the Indians fell to the Royals 1-0.

Highlight

Javier Baez pulled off this amazing blind tag in the Cubs' 6-5 win against the Padres.

What's Next?
