MLB wrap: Cubs, Brewers remain deadlocked in NL wild-card race image

The National League wild-card race is far from over.

By virtue of Cubs and Brewers losses on Wednesday, the divisional rivals remain in a tie for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Both teams had chances to move to within one game of the Nationals in the top spot, as Washington lost to the Cardinals, but it was not meant to be as Chicago fell 3-2 to the Reds in extra innings and the Brewers took a 2-1 loss to the Padres.

And on a note that can only annoy Cubs fans, Chicago finished the season 8-11 against the Reds. It went 37-18 against all other sub-.500 teams.

The Cubs have seven games left against the Cardinals this season over their final 10. They have a chance to either overtake the Cardinals or fall behind the Brewers.

Studs of the Night

Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard went 2 for 4 with two home runs in a 7-4 loss to the Mets.

Royals starter Danny Duffy and A's righty Homer Bailey each tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out a combined 17 batters in Oakland's 1-0 extra-inning win.

Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin tossed seven scoreless innings in a 4-1 win over the Braves.

Gerrit Cole struck out 10 batters in eight innings of work in a 3-2 Astros' win over the Rangers. Cole now has 302 strikeouts on the season and Houston has won 100 games for the third year in a row.

Dud of the Night

Orioles reliever Miguel Castro gave up five earned runs in 2/3 innings in an 11-10 loss to the Blue Jays.

Highlight

Dexter Fowler robbed a home run in the Cardinals' 5-1 win over the Nationals.
