The Tigers, widely expected to be offloading some of their top talent before the trade deadline, may not be so eager to part with Matthew Boyd.
According to MLB.com, the Tigers "remain uncertain" about whether to deal the 28-year-old lefty, one of the most sought-after starters on the market. The Phillies are rumored to be particularly interested in Boyd (4.07 ERA, 1.13 WHIP in 2019). The Yankees, Astros and Brewers have also been mentioned as possible trade destinations.
But the MLB.com report notes that the Tigers' "high asking price" for Boyd has made some baseball executives "doubt that he will be moved at this year’s deadline." Boyd is under team control for three more seasons.
On the other hand, the report says the Tigers are "virtually certain" to trade outfielder Nicholas Castellanos and "almost certain" to trade All-Star closer Shane Greene. Detroit has reportedly been very active in shopping Greene in recent days, with the Phillies also believed to be involved in those discussions.
The trade discussions involving Boyd have also reportedly involved pairing him with either Castellanos or Greene to sweeten a potential deal.
