MLB trade rumors: Cubs interested in Diamondbacks' David Peralta image

The Cubs are looking to improve their outfield depth and they have their eye on one player in Arizona for help.

Chicago is one of several teams interested in Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta, according to The Athletic.

The only question is whether Arizona decides to move Peralta.

The Diamondbacks are currently second in the National League West at 46-45, but they are 1 1/2 games back of the second wild-card spot, and if the team goes on a losing streak after the All-Star break it very well could make some moves.

Peralta also has one year of arbitration remaining and, at 31 years old, he may not be in the team's plans for the future. It may be time to sell him and get a pretty good package back, as he won't be hitting the open market immediately after the season.

Peralta is a career .292 hitter with a .347 on-base percentage. More importantly, he has hit .311 against righties in 1,753 career at-bats and the Cubs want some added depth against right-handed pitching.

In addition, Jason Heyward has dealt with some injuries, so it would be good to add a left-handed bat that could spell him, as well.

The Cubs go into the All-Star break with a half-game lead over the Brewers for first place in the National League Central.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein is considering all of the team's options.

"I don't think sitting on our hands is really a viable option," Epstein said during an interview with 670 The Score. "We want to be in a position to have enough belief that we're looking to aggressively add and sort of polish up what we think can be a championship team. If we're not, that means this stretch of bad play has continued. And if this stretch of bad play continues, then certainly ... a ton of changes are in order."

He continued: "Certainly between now and July 31, if we haven't started to play better and even if we have in some areas ... change to just change the environment might be called for, change as a catalyst. There are lots of different areas."
