MLB free agency rumors: Mets looking at former Brewers closer Jeremy Jeffress image

The Mets need relief help. Former Brewers closer Jeremy Jeffress needs a new team.

Could this be a match?

Jeffress, who was released by the Brewers on Sunday, is "on the Mets' radar," according to a New York Post report. He's also drawn interest from the Phillies and Reds.

A 2018 All-Star, Jeffress has struggled this season, posting a 5.02 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 48 appearances. Although those numbers are nothing like the 1.29 ERA Jeffress had last season, they'd actually be a slight upgrade on the Mets' current situation. Edwin Diaz, himself an All-Star last season, has a 5.65 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 58 games. Jeurys Familia (6.43 ERA) has also not pitched up to his previous form.

The Mets entered play Thursday 4 1/2 games out of the second NL wild-card spot, so any potential upgrade is worth consideration. However, if they do sign Jeffress, he would not be eligible for the postseason. Players had to be on an MLB roster by Sept. 1 to qualify for a postseason roster.
