The MLB All-Star voting process used to be simpler. Fans used to just keep voting until the starters were determined. Nothing too fancy.
In 2019, though, the league changed the process to introduce different phases, which saw finalists determined on the first ballot and then voted on during the second. By 2023, the first phase of voting also determined a pair of automatic starters.
The newest format is just the latest change to a voting process that has undergone many changes over the years.
There have been many changes to the voting process over the years. How are the All-Star rosters determined in 2024? Here's what you need to know.

How does MLB All-Star voting work?
There were two phases of All-Star voting in 2024. The first was general voting, in which fans could vote for any and all players they wanted to see play in the All-Star Game on July 16.
Following the end of the first phase, MLB announced finalists at each position and one starter for each league.
Phase 1: June 5-June 27
The first phase was reminiscent of the old phase of fan voting. Fans could vote for any player in the hopes of making them a starter. During Phase 1, fans could vote up to five times per day.
The top vote-getters in each league earned starting roles right away. Those honors wound up going to Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge for the American League and Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper for the National League.
The phase also determined the finalists for the remaining positions. In the infield, there were two finalists for each position. In the outfield, there were six total.
Those numbers did change based on the position of the two top vote-getters. Since Judge earned the most votes in the American League, there were just four outfield finalists. Since Harper earned the most NL votes, there were no first-place finalists.
Phase 2: June 30-July 3
The finalists at each position then went head-to-head in direct voting results. The winners at each spot earned the remaining starting nods, as announced on July 3.
Pitchers and reserves
Fans won't get to decide on pitchers or bench players. Some of those spots will be determined by the players, who will vote on five starting pitchers, three relievers and eight reserves. The last spots will be picked by the Commissioner's Office to round out the rosters at 32 players.
Roster spots decided: 23 per league (July 7, 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN)

MLB All-Star roster rules
The only roster restriction for All-Star rosters is that each team has to have at least one representative. If the player is replaced, the league does not have to fill the spot with another member of that team.
