Mets trade rumors: New York still looking to move Zack Wheeler, Jason Vargas after acquiring Marcus Stroman image

The Mets could be both buyers and sellers this month.

New York is still looking to move starters Zack Wheeler and Jason Vargas before the July 31 deadline, according to a report from SNY, which cites unidentified league sources.

The Mets are also listening to offers for right-hander Noah Syndergaard, but he’s considered “less likely” to be sent elsewhere, the report says. The team could deal closer Edwin Diaz, as well.

The report comes after the Mets acquired righty Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays on Sunday in exchange for pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson. Stroman is from Medford, New York.

“Marcus is a dynamic talent who will bring tremendous passion to our team and energy our fans will truly appreciate,” Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said in a statement. “As a Long Island native, we believe that he will thrive playing in New York.”

Stroman has received little run support and has a 6-11 record this season. Yet, he holds a 2.96 ERA and was named to his first All-Star team in early July.

"NEW YORK!" Stroman wrote on Twitter shortly after the deal was reported. "Where I was born. Where my heart lies. Where my family resides. Crazy excited for this part of my journey. Some things were meant to be!"

The Mets have won four in a row and finished play Sunday six games out of the second National League wild-card spot with a 50-55 record.

"We are going to be open-minded," Van Wagenen told reporters in mid-July. "We are going to be thoughtful and measured in terms of what we do as we approach the deadline, all with the eyes on trying to improve this club."

The Braves, Twins, Brewers, Dodgers, Padres and Astros are all looking to add a starter, according to the report.
