Mets OMG sign meaning, explained: How Jose Iglesias started New York's rallying cry for 2024 playoffs image

It's become a tradition in baseball for dugouts to find a creative way to celebrate home runs. Some teams have dances, others have special hats, and a few have specific tokens.

In the Mets case, it's a three-letter sign.

New York sealed a spot in the 2024 postseason by grabbing the No. 5 seed in the NL, securing a matchup against the Padres. The Mets turned things around in the back half of the season, propelling their way to a spot in October.

If anyone is watching the contest involving the Mets, whenever a New York member blasts a ball over the outfield fence, a specific sign can be seen in the dugout, with its bright colors and bold letters grabbing the attention of fans in the stadium and on couches at home. It's three letters — OMG.

The "OMG" sign has become a staple for the boys from Queens, and the squad is hoping its good juju continues into the postseason, with a matchup against San Diego in the wild-card round to kick off the 2024 playoffs.

Here is more to know about the "OMG" sign.

Mets OMG sign meaning

The Mets have a new home run tradition — the "OMG" sign.

It was based on a shirt that Alex Cohen, wife of Mets owner Steve Cohen, posted on her Instagram. Artist Jerome McCroy, who goes by Jaymaccustoms, created the sign and then gave it to Cohen's wife. It eventually got its way into the locker room, and eventually into the dugout.

The "OMG" is in reference to the song by Mets infielder Jose Iglesias. The New York veteran's job may be on the diamond, but he also has a career in the recording booth. Iglesias has published music under his stage name, Candelita.

The track, released on June 28, has garnered more than 300,000 plays on both Spotify and YouTube.

"The man's doing it right now," Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said, per MLB.com. "We love to have him. He's a great guy. He deserves all the success on the field and off the field with his music career."

The Cuban-American revealed that he became interested in music shortly after defecting from Cuba as an 18-year-old. Over the years, he has entrenched himself into a number of musical networks, forming a close-knit bond with Latin music superstar Marc Anthony, among others.

"I love music," Iglesias said, per MLB.com. "That’s what I do in my downtime in my hotels, in my travels. I write songs. It’s pretty cool. It’s something fun that I really enjoy doing.”

Candelita 'OMG' lyrics in English

It seems Candelita is spreading a message of peace and prosperity with his most high-profile tune, with "OMG's" lyrics aiming to uplift disciples of the Mets' utility man's music.

OMG, throw all the bad things away from here

OMG, give me health and prosperity

I have nothing, but I am happy

Only memories inhabit me

Dreams to fulfill and I’m going to achieve them

Maybe I’m Crazy, but not lazy

And I will keep going until I achieve it

OMG, throw all the bad things away from here

OMG, give me health and prosperity

Let all the planets align for me

May my wallet not go on a diet anymore

May good luck visit me

To help all my people

OMG, throw all the bad things away from here

OMG, give me health and prosperity

I have to give thanks for one more day of life

For the friends who are few today

Don’t do evil because everything turns around

One day you’re down, the next you’re up

Dreams to fulfill and I’m going to achieve them

Maybe I’m Crazy, but not lazy

And I will keep going until I achieve it

OMG

Candelita

OMG

Mauro

Tell them, Guianko

OMG, throw all the bad things away from here

OMG, give me health and prosperity

Let the evil tongues have no chance

And let envy not reach me

May time always be my witness

I only do good, that’s why I ask

OMG

Fight for your dreams

Because yes, you can

OMG

And when you don’t find the way out

Sing with me

OMG, throw all the bad things away from here

OMG, give me health and prosperity
