The Astros called up top prospect Corbin Martin in a corresponding move.
Because Altuve has been put on the injured list, Houston doesn't have to send anyone to the minors as Martin is on both the team's 40-man, and 25-man rosters.
Martin will take Collin McHugh's spot in the starting rotation and make his MLB debut Sunday.
Altuve has struggled this season at the plate batting a career-worst .243 in 144 at-bats. However, with a .234 BABIP he was expected to turn things around in the coming weeks before getting hurt. He does have nine home runs and 21 RBIs on the year.
